I don't know, typically M8 x 1.,25 or 5/16" UNF or UNC though manufacturers have used many other sizes including such oddball sizes as M7 x 1mm. Recognising bolt and thread sizes is one of the mechanic's core skills.

You could try turning a few likely looking bolts in by hand or if you prefer the correct bolts should be available from the dealer as spare parts. If they aren't available the parts manual will state the bolt dimensions.

I'm pretty sure Chrysler never put a 4.0L engine in a PT Cruiser (V6? V8?). And since the valve cover gasket is located between the valve cover and the cylinder head, there is no bolt that holds just the valve cover gasket in place - all the bolts hold the valve cover in place. If there is excess oil around one of those bolts, you have a break in the gasket (or a bad gasket if the gasket is for the bolt only) or the bolts are not tightened to specification.

Is there some reason you can't use a wrench to determine the size? Or do you mean you lost the bolt? If so, get one from dealer--how much could it cost?

ok this is tough, im assuming the bolt has broken and your left with the removel of the threaded end of the bolt. the only thing i can think of is to drill out the center of the bolt with a smaller sized drill bit about 2 to 3 sizes smaller than the actual bolt shaft [make sure you center the hole as best you can so not to marr the threads so the new bolt will tighten properly] this will take alot of cutting oil as you drill try to go in at least half the bolt length. then you will need to tap the new hole with a LEFT HANDED TAP slighty bigger than the drill bit used to make the hole. [ again i dont know the size of bolt we are talking about] then with a left handed bolt start the bolt in your new threades. because you are tightining turning to the left as the new bolt bottoms out it will be loosening the broken bolt. i dont know how much room you have i beleave this is on the backside of the motor.. again i hope this helps i have done this before on various equipment and it works for me [most of the time] good luck
