Question about 2004 Subaru Legacy

The positive battery terminal has corroded through the wiring harness on my girlfriend's 2004 subaru legacy. Can you advise the easiest way to replace this part. It looks like I have to cut the wire to replace the clamp. Please help, thanks.

Yes, go to subaru dealer and buy org part. It will come with end and new wire attached. You will have to attach to starter. Not the easiest way to fix, but the best way. You can just cut off end and replace with a new one from autoparts store. Get battery cleaner and spray on battery and rinse off to get all corrosion off or you will have same problem again quickly.

The best thing to do is replace the wire. As there will be additional corrosion inside the cable, you can check buy stripping the wire about 4 inches past the connector, it the wire has white powder on it then it needs to be replaced as both ends will have the white powders, if you cut off the cable you can cause an increase in resistance to the starter and alternator and damaging them both, buy a replacement cable to be sure, once they start corroding it's impossible to stop it from corroding more.

Grounding issue? Fusible link? 1997 Subaru Legacy won't start


Yea i would check the fusible link. Check all the wires at the alternator and to the starter. Take them loose and clean all connections. Check all body to chassis and engine to chassis/ body grounds. If they look weathered make some and replace or just add some. With the age of it you could have highly corroded wires.

97 subaru legacy outback, two alternators test OK at autozone and advanced. When installed and tested no voltage is detected...new battery installed also, noticed the ground at the starter where the wire...


If the groung was glowing, check for corrosion on terminals and inside wire were it was glowing. If you find any it would be best to replace the ground wire with new.

Check to make sure that you have a goo ground by putting a volt meter on the positive battery terminal and the negative on a manifold or some other metal object in engine compartment. You should get battery voltage. It not you know for sure that the ground it bad.

I can't get the positive battery terminal cable off of the old battery because it is too corroded. So, I would like to replace both terminal cables and the battery. The problem is there is a wiring harness...


Best would be to wet the battery terminals with water, take a sponge and place it on the battery terminals which are corroded and pour water to it, let it stay a while and again pour some water to the sponge, you will note tht the corrosion will start to fade away and thus you will be able to remove the battery terminals kinda easily!.

My Subaru Legacy Outback won't start and the battery is fully charged, the starter won't even click, what is the problem?


Starters don't click.
Solenoids click.

So remove push-on connector from Solenoid wire.
Should be clean, secure & relay bracket grounded.
Connect a jumper wire between battery positive terminal & the exposed terminal on the solenoid.
If starter motor now operates then it's the ignition switch.
If starter motor does not operate then replace solenoid.

2004 Jeep Liberty 4WD 3.7L MFI SOHC 6cyl
Starteer - Removal & Installation

2.4L & 3.7L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the starter mounting bolts.
  4. On the 3.7L engine, the left side exhaust pipe and front driveshaft must be disconnected.
  5. Disconnect the starter solenoid harness connections.
  6. Remove the starter.
To install:

  1. Connect the starter solenoid wiring connectors.
  2. Install the starter and torque the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  3. On the 3.7L, the left side exhaust pipe and front driveshaft.
  4. Install the negative battery cable and check for proper operation.

2.8L Engine
  1. Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and support vehicle.
  3. Disconnect solenoid wire connector from solenoid terminal
  4. Remove battery cable from stud on starter solenoid.
  5. Remove 3 starter mounting bolts.
  6. Remove starter from transmission bellhousing.
To install:
  1. Position starter motor to transmission housing.
  2. Connect battery cable solenoid terminal wire harness connector to connector receptacle on starter solenoid. Always support starter motor during this process. Do not let starter motor hang from wire harness.
  3. Install battery cable eyelet terminal onto solenoid B(+) terminal stud.
  4. Install nut securing battery cable eyelet terminal to starter solenoid B(+) terminal stud.
  5. Refer to torque specifications.
  6. Position starter motor and install 3 bolts. Tighten 3 bolts in this sequence: top bolt, bottom bolt, middle bolt. Refer to torque specifications.
  7. Lower vehicle.
  8. Connect negative battery cable.

Do you hear a 'click' when the key is turned to start? Have someone try the key while you listen under the hood. It should be the starter solenoid clicking. You need either a test light or voltmeter to test further. One large terminal on the solenoid has the large wire from the battery positive, and should always show voltage/light at all times. Test the other side of the solenoid (large terminal) that is connected to the terminal on the starter motor. It should show light/voltage when the key is turned. If it doesn't, the solenoid must be replaced. If it does show light/voltage, then the starter motor is defective (probably brushes). If you get no click when turning the key, test the small terminal on the solenoid, you should see a voltage/light change when the key is turned. If you see a change, but no click, the solenoid coil is open or the case of the solenoid is not grounding where it is mounted. Try loosening the mounting and re-tighten. If no help, replace the solenoid. If you see no change at the small terminal, remove the wire from it and using a spare piece of wire, touch the small terminal to, first, the large terminal that the battery is connected to, then to the the mounting bolt for the solenoid. If the solenoid is good, the starter should operate with one of these two tests. In that case, the starter position of key switch is open--replace the ignition switch.
