Its aprocess of tracing the wires on the circuit with a tester from the power sorce & checking along its path to the other ends!
a bad earth or ground can also cause loss of continuity [result looks like no power]

Dash lights do not work 2000 ford exploier

All go out at once, first check fuses, then dimmer switch for dash lights, finally headlight switch. To check dimmer switch, pull connection off back, on harness with test light and headlight switch activated, 1 of the leads should have power, if so, use ohm meter on dimmer to make sure it has reading between 0 and some value, if no value, open, dimmer is bad, if there wasn't power then check headlight switch, there should be heavier gauge wire that powers switch and 1 for output to hi/lo switch, smaller gauge wires for tail lamps, dash lights, license plate lamps, parking lights. The color wires from dimmer would correspond to the same colored wires on headlamp switch, probe that connection on headlamp switch with switch engaged and see if you have power, if not replace switch, if so, check wire from switch to dimmer. Now if the lights slowly went from bright one day, to less bright some other day, to not working, then the bulbs are bad... good luck...

2000 ford focus dash lights not working

Check Fuse box Number 30 which is a 10Amp fuse
& number 15 which is a 7.5amp fuse.
you met have a blow fuse.
If good
Did you check the dimmer on the head light switch Pull out to see if you have power on cable color orange / blue. (Pin 9)
If this is good
Pull cluster out to see if you have power on plug pin 3 in instrument cluster this there..
If you have power
than replace the llumination bulb or cluster.
Very rare to find a ground poblem here.

My 97 ford escort last night when I got out still had the brake lights on. when I went to fix the problem the lights went out and then when i went to put the car in drive the car will not get out of park.

I would replace, or at least look at the brake switch under the dash connected to the bracket in front of the barke pedel. it does double duty. Brake lights and shift lock release.
