Knocking sounds in park and neutral

Verry loud noise and I can feel it in the car and the wheels.
Took the oil and filter out and it smelled burned, in the oil pan were smal pieces of metal.
What can couse such a problem and do I need to overhoul the transmission?

The engine & NOT the transmission sounds like it has spun a big end [conrod] bearing !
Yes it will need to be removed & rebuilt!
a good rebuilder will replace all hoses & clamps in the cooling system aswell as flush the trnasmission cooler& its pipes!
good luck & choose a workshop with good history! or just get a changeover engin fitted its quicker!
Cheers Rob.

Sounds like transmission internals have failed
best to get overhauled or replaced as change over which could be cheaper and quicker.

Knocking than oil light on just change filter and oil

Your engine is gone. Replace or rebuild. If your car is old, junk it. Time for a new one.

Why is my oil filter leaking onto my starter?

Check the seal on the oil filter. If the seal is torn or missing it will leak and the oil leak will cause loud noises when it's in gear.

Knocking noise around the front passenger wheel area!?

Do you feel it in the steering wheel? if so it could be the intermediate steering shaft. If not it could be a sway bar link or bushing.

Loud clunking noise

yes you can have a bearing going out of a pulley,as far as you smelling oil burning you could have a valve cover leaking onto the exhaust manifold.

2003 ponitac sunfire, almost 88,000 miles. Slowly was making a 90 degree curve when loud pounding sound started somewhere in the rear of car. Stopped & put it in park and revered the engine and there...

Sounds like a combo condition concerning your rear brakes and wheel bearings, if the noise was or is louder on right turns then left replace the right side wheel bearing and vice versa.Get this car to a shop however immediately as the ABS brake system may be trying to lock up the wheel that may be wobbling causing all sorts of havoc.

My wife drove the mini van when it was low or almost out of oil. now the engine makes a loud knocking sound.......is the engine blown or is there a possible fix, to save the engine?

Knocking means you're still low on oil. Try have an oil and filter change. If your engine is blown, you won't hear or feel it cause it's seized. A dying engine from oil starvation would make screeching metal to metal noise. Yours sounds more like a stuck cam follower from oil starvation.

The engine is making a really loud knocking noise and the oil light is on. it also smells like something is burning or running hot

Doesn't sound good. Check oil level. Also check for metal in the oil once you pull the dipstick. A loud knocking noise is a sign of a blown engine may be you spun a rod in which case you would need engine replacement or rebuild

Clicking/knocking sound and feel when shifting & smell

first check the clutch hydrolic fluid. If it's low or leaking, it may not disengage the clutch completely causing the disk to drag (and smell) The knocking sounds like you're loosing the thowout bearing and/or possibly the disk (there are cushion springs that may have come out of place). Take it to a transmission shop that does free diagnosis. anything other than fluid-related is going to be pricey.

Loud ticking/knocking/rattling sound when I start/accelerate

hi is it miss-firing as it sounds like a knocking noise can be anything but if you can feel it on the accelerater pedal then the noise sounds like its on the inlet valve side which would transfere the noise up the throttle body where the accelerater is located it could be something as simple as a tappet come loose to a burned valve you need to have a look do a compression test and take the rocker cover off see if theres anything come loose yates210456
