This happened to me on vacation. I stopped by the nearest convenience store, filled the tank with gas, then added a bottle of fuel injector cleaner. I haven't had a problem since.

Add 2 bottles of "heet" to your gas tank...also add 1 to 2 bottles of injector and gas system cleaner...good to remember this lesson of when not to buy gas...::( Hope this helps.
have you recently purchased gas? that's 1st question. if you suspect bad gas, add 1 bottle of CLEAR rubbing alcohol to your fuel tank, this will dry up any water that has been added into your fuel tank. or perhaps your fuel injectors may be clogging up,suggest that you add lucas fuel injector cleaner to your fuel tank. you can find the lucas at any auto zone, advance auto parts store. or check your local auto parts store for it. add it to your fuel tank and run the engine,it cleans your fuel injectors as you drive the car,or run the engine.if this does'nt help,i suggest that you check for bad spark plugs,or bad spark plug wires. this will also make your engine sputter.do you have a check engine light on? if so,auto zone or advance auto can code read your car for free. they will plug it up and tell you which sensor is bad or what you need to replace to make the light go off.narrow your search by ruling out this 1st {bad fuel} {spark plugs in need of replacement,or spark plug wires in need of replacement} hoping this helps, and thank you for choosing fixya.com
If the exhaust has a raw fuel smell I would start by running some fuel injector cleaner through the gas tank. Put in a whole bottle when down to 1/4 tank and run it a while then fill the tank and add another bottle. Also it can't hurt to change the air filter if you haven't done this for a while. If it doesn't clear up after that have a diagnostic done at autozone or any auto parts chain store that will do this for you for free.
Possible causes are: -water in the fuel: fill it up at a different place, or if the tank is already mostly full, buy a bottle of water remover ("dry gas") at an auto parts store and add it to the tank -dirty injectors: if this started gradually, there may be crud on your injectors. Buy a bottle of injector cleaner at an auto parts store and add it to the tank -lack of spark: If neither of those solve it, you've got a problem with the spark plugs (less likely), spark plug wires (more likely) or ignition coil. Replace the plugs and wires, they're due on a car that age if they haven't been done. If that doesn't fix it, you need a new ignition coil.
It could be the fuel, especially these days with the different suppliers and additives, not to mention the extreme moisture in the air & seeping into the fuel tanks at local stations.
If you know your car doesn't need a standard tune up, the air-filter, fuel filter, and spark plugs have been maintained and are working properly you may just need to have the injectors cleaned, or use a little fuel injector cleaner every few tanks of gas to clean them up.
I always fill my fuel filter & those I'm servicing with fuel injector cleaner when I replace them. (1/2 full) This has seemed to provide ample cleaning for most as I've never had an injector issue return to me.
Try some regular fuel injector cleaner available at wal-mart or any parts store. Not the expensive bottle that claims it will make your car perfect just the regular 2.99 a bottle stuff. When your car is at about 1/2 tank on the fuel gauge, add a bottle & drive that tank to 1/8. After refilling later & getting down to about 1/2 tank add another bottle. This should do some good if you're talking about hesitation & minor idle changes that don't trigger sensor problems.
Of course if any of the parts mentioned need to be replaced, this would be the time.
