2001 S80 Volvo left/right lower control arms cracks

My 2001 Volvo s80 has 97 K and the mechanic suggested he noticed cracks in the lower left/right lower control arms. The estimate is around $900. He advised me to watch for them. Any one has similar problems.

Thanks for the reply. I have noticed cracks in the bushings myself. "watch for them" means, When breaking at high speed it is going to wobble?
He is a Sears Auto mechanic and mentioned he noticed a lot on Volvos? The split is $567 for both left and right control arms and labour is $270.00 and alignment is $70.

Explain what you mean by "to watch for them". Do you mean that you should watch the cracks to see if they spread or enlarge?

These components are part of your steering. If there is a crack it is a complete break waiting to happen. You don't want to be driving down the road and then loose your steering when you go over a bump. Frankly, I would not wait for the break to happen but I would do the repair now, provided it is a legitimate problem.

Your mechanic might be able to find cheaper parts used as I would expect the parts are the majority of the cost for the repair. Did you get a breakdown of the parts and labor for that $900 estimate? You might be able to find the parts with a little research. For example, try:

Is this mechanic a Volvo specialist?

Did you get to see the cracks yourself at the mechanic? Can you see them at home (by sticking your head under the car)?

If you have to, go back to the mechanic for further information. Or call him.

What causes this Volvo S80 T6 "Engine System Service Required"

This message could have been brought up for any number of reasons and the fact that they are fully computerised makes them very complicated (eg. Sensor failure elecronic failure, misfiring mechanical failure) without the right tools, you will need a volvo vida code reader (check ebay). Otherwise you will have to go to a volvo repairer to get the car scanned for error codes. Note; a independent volvo workshop is generally cheaper for the same thing.

The audio on the right side of my 2001 S80 doesn't work. Any ideas why?

Take the radio back out and double check your connections. If it is a factory system you may have the connections crossed some Volvo radios come with multiple plug-ins

2001 Sebring Sedan LX, 2.7l V-6, VIN Code U Lower balljoints: Can the front left and right lower ball joints be pressed into or out of the lower control arms on this vehicle? I'm being told by my mechanic...

Sounds odd... Rikkalan,

(but it appears AMAZON agrees with your mechanic)

Just go to ROCKAUTO and look up your parts...

If the entire arm needs to be replaced the separate ball-joint will not be listed...

Hope this helps!!
