Question about 1992 Nissan Sentra 4 Door

No accessories working, but engine turns on and drives

New battery and alt.put in by son in law after started having charging problems. got it back finished up the putting back together. it starts and drives. but no accessories at all and when you pull positive off battery it dies. any ideas, fuses are good, could it be a relay?

Have the alternator tested if it dies when positive cable removed, the car is running from battery only

My 1994 honda passport will not stay charged new altnator and new battery


is the engine running at 800 rpm or more.
if engine RPM is way low the Alternator will die out.
trans light , where is that? name it. exactly
lets focus first on the engine, and RPM
does the dash have a tachmeter, ? yes, then use that.
we keep a hand tachometer (optical , ready for no tach cars)
RPM is everything.... maxwells laws. and such.
1: rpm 800 or more all the time. rule 1, do not skip this.
2: belt to ALT not slipping'
3: battery good. terminals on battery cables tight both ends and
NOT PACKED in green corrosion, .
4: alternator case is grounded good.
5: The connection and ALT, all good.
6: you key on, and the dash charge light must turn on,
if not fix that now, on old cars, the dash light , causes the ALT to self excite, if the lamp burns out the alternator boots up DEAD.

7: new alt is the wrong alt. zillion wrong ones, only 1 works.

I have changed the alt and regulator,I have power at the alt and the regulator and the relay clicks when the alt is pluged in but still wont charge,same problem I had with the original alt so I gont a new...


One thing you need to check is all the grounds and the positive lead coming from the battery. Cut the insulation back at both ends and check for corrosion. If the wires green or dirty, i'd reccomend replacing the wire. Corrosion on battery wires on the terminals or on the alternator side, will keep the alternator from charging. Make sure the grounds aren't loose and aren't too corroded either. This may not be the problem, but its definitely a probable cause and wouldn't hurt to look. Just my two cents.

did the alternotor come with a new pigtail?those big rectangal connectors that plug into the alt go bad all the time.plus the guages on them are notorios for lying check with a volt meter.no meter?at night turn on headlights aimed at wall notice brightness start motor,note brightness when engine starts if brighter then alt works

sounds like the trunk light switch may have gotten knocked loose .. that would leave the trunk light on all the time and would run the battery down in a few days even if fully charged to start with .. you can take out the trunk light to test that theory .. the alternator will only put out what is needed and thats probably 30 amps with everything on .. to test its maximum capacity you need to hook up an external load and you have to run the engine at a specified RPM ... for a quick test.. if your alternator maintains about 13.2 volts at idle with everything turned on .. then its gererally working ok ..

Battery wont stay charged, alternator problem?


I suggest that you take the car to an autoparts store and have them check the alternator output. That will tell whether the alternator is putting out sufficient voltage to keep the battery charged or not. Most parts stores will check the alternator for free. Hope this helped and best wishes.

Car putting out to high of voltage. New battery in car, now dead.


Usually when the battery light comes on it means there is a problem with the alternator. It means it is putting out less than 12.2-12.5 volts.

Starts, but put it in gear, it goes dead. will idle.


1. Had mechanic check timing again. Belt off a couple degrees. Should fix problem.
2. Don't know. this is my son-in-laws car.
3. No.
4. I think valves were bent due to timing belt breaking and son-in-law trying to start car when it went dead.
5. Will do this if timing belt reset don't work.
