Question about Ford Fairmont

Instrument cluster not showing odometer and speedometer and makes water temperature go straight to hot, fuel gauge stays on empty although its not empty and water is not empty in radiator and is not hot. Warning lights below dash show, oil, fuel gauge, fanbelt gauge, and also seatbelts warning lights stay on also. But nothing is wrong with the car. Its a high density Digital instrument cluster dashboard for a ea Ford Fairmont 1989 sedan.

    Hi there, Well I tried to replace the instrument cluster with another one I paid $150 for and it does the exact same thing no change so what is an regulator voltage for my instrument cluster, where is it? and what do I do to get it checked?

    It ended up being the battery terminals, everything on the positive was loose and needed tightening, I ended up at the wreckers getting a replacement of that part and it fixed the problem.

    But be careful not to touch anything else while working with it, I took the battery off first to fix the positive terminal, I forgot what you call it now but its got electrical wiring that sits also on the side of the positive terminal, when replacing make sure you take off the battery first before fixing the electrical wiring on the positive terminal

It could be the voltage regulator for your instrument cluster is the problem.

The odometer is not working on my 1999 navigator. It just says 0. What could be the problem?


Odometer The instrument cluster receives odometer rolling count status from the PCM-engine computer and stores the mileage in non-volatile memory (NVM). When the instrument cluster fails to receive the odometer rolling count status for more than two seconds, the odometer display will show dashes.

HEC Dealer Test Mode
To enter the HEC Dealer Test Mode, depress and hold the instrument cluster SELECT/RESET button and then turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. Continue pressing the SELECT/RESET button (5 seconds) until tESt is displayed in the odometer. The SELECT/RESET button must be released within 3 seconds of the odometer displaying tESt to begin the dealer test mode. Depress the SELECT/RESET button to advance through the following steps until dtc is displayed. Depressing the SELECT/RESET button will display any continuous DTCs stored before proceeding to the next step.

All segments illuminated Illuminates all odometer segments. If any odometer segment is inoperative, INSTALL a new instrument cluster; REFER to Instrument Cluster .
Odometer Display Description GAGE Activates gauge sweep of all gauges, then displays present gauge values. Also carries out the checksum tests on ROM and EE. If the gauge sweep is inoperative, INSTALL a new instrument cluster; REFER to Instrument Cluster . All segments illuminated Illuminates all odometer segments. If any odometer segment is inoperative, INSTALL a new instrument cluster; REFER to Instrument Cluster . bulb Illuminates all micro-controlled lamps and LEDs (low oil pressure/high coolant temperature, low fuel, service engine soon, brake, low range). INSTALL a new bulb or LED as necessary. r Returns to normal operation of all micro-controlled lamps and LEDs and displays hexadecimal value for ROM level (used when requesting assistance from the hotline). I have a 1998'Ford Explorer and half the dash lights are out and all pod a sudden my speedometer just quit. Need to know what fuses would go to these, so I can try that. Ty


Sorry but it's not a fuse problem . There is not a fuse just for the speedometer . The microprocessor inside the instrument cluster determines where the speedometer needle points , just like the fuel gauge , tachometer etc... Having the vehicle checked for DTC'S would be the proper step to take .
Vehicle Speed Signal
The vehicle speed signal is generated by the rear anti-lock brake sensor and sent to the 4-wheel anti-lock brake system (4WABS) module. The 4WABS module sends the vehicle speed signal via circuit 679 (GY/BK) to all systems which require a vehicle speed signal input.
Speedometer
The electronic speedometer receives a speed signal from the 4WABS module.

  • The Speedometer/Odometer Is Inoperative
  • Circuitry.
  • Speedometer.
  • GO to Pinpoint Test E .

No where in this factory diagnostic step does it say to check a fuse !

Instrument Cluster
Measure the voltage between instrument cluster C288-7, circuit 1001 (WH/YE), and ground.
  • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes GO to E2 .

No REPAIR circuit 1001 (WH/YE). TEST the system for normal operation.
E2 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PRINTED CIRCUIT
Instrument Cluster
NOTE: Measurements must be made to the speedometer gauge pins that are inside the instrument cluster printed circuit clips.
    Measure the resistance between the speedometer pins (which can be seen in the middle of the instrument cluster printed circuit clips) and the corresponding instrument cluster terminal. Refer to the table for the pin and terminal assignments.

  • Are the resistances less than 1 ohm?
Yes GO to E3 .

No INSTALL a new instrument cluster printed circuit. REFER to Instrument Cluster Printed Circuit . TEST the system for normal operation.

I have a 2010 Chevy impala LS instrument cluster and it has a 20 pin plug I'm trying to figure out which wire's on the back of the cluster are for the speed sensor, rpm, gas, and temp wires.


Boy your way off base . All the gauges are inputs from the ECM - engine computer . The VSS - vehicle speed sensor , ETC - engine coolant temp sensor , sending unit in the fuel tank , All this sensors input the engine computer . The PCM then sends this info on the GMLAN serial data bus ,communications network . The Instrument cluster has a microprocessor inside that translates this info an controls the gauges. You probably have an instrument cluster problem or a communication network problem . Your best bet is to take your vehicle to the dealer or some other qualified repair shop. Need to have it checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes.
Indicators and Warning Messages
Refer to Indicator/Warning Message Description and Operation.
Engine Coolant Temperature Gage
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the engine coolant temperature as determined by the engine control module (ECM). The IPC receives a serial data message from the ECM indicating the engine coolant temperature. The IPC receives the coolant temperature information via serial data message from the body control module (BCM). The engine coolant temperature gage defaults to 60?°C (140?°F) or below if:

The ECM detects a malfunction in the engine coolant temperature sensor circuit.

?€¢
The IPC detects a loss of serial data communications with the ECM.

The IPC detects a loss of serial data communications with the BCM.
Fuel Gage
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the fuel level as determined by the engine control module (ECM). The IPC receives a serial data message from the ECM indicating the fuel level percent. The body control module (BCM) sends the fuel level information from the ECM to the IPC via a serial data message indicating the fuel level percent. The fuel gage defaults to empty if:

The ECM detects a malfunction in the fuel level sensor circuit.

The IPC detects a loss of serial data communications with the ECM.

When the fuel level is less than a pre-determined value, the low fuel indicator illuminates in the IPC.
Odometer
The vehicle odometer is calculated and stored electronically in the instrument panel cluster (IPC). The IPC contains a season odometer and trip odometer A or B. Momentarily press the trip/fuel button in order to toggle between the season odometer and the trip odometer. Press the set/reset button for greater than 0.25 seconds, while the trip odometer is displayed, in order to reset the trip odometer. The IPC displays the vehicle mileage and trip mileage as determined by the engine control module (ECM). The IPC calculates the mileage based on the serial data vehicle speed information from the ECM. The odometer will display 'error' if an internal IPC memory failure is detected. The odometer displays either miles or kilometers and can be set through the customization menu in the driver information center (DIC).
PRNDL Display
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the selected gear position as determined by the engine control module (ECM). The IPC receives a serial data message from the ECM indicating the gear position. The PRNDL display blanks if:

The ECM detects a malfunction in the transmission range switch circuit.

The IPC detects a loss of serial data communications with the ECM.

The IPC detects a loss of serial data communications with the body control module (BCM).
Speedometer
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the vehicle speed as determined by the engine control module (ECM). The IPC calculates the mileage based on serial data vehicle speed information from the ECM. The IPC receives vehicle speed information from the body control module (BCM) via a serial data message. The speedometer defaults to 0 km/h (0 mph) if the IPC detects a loss of serial data communications with the ECM or BCM.
Tachometer

Guages not working,


If all voltages checked ok,then most probably its faulty instrument cluster board on which gauges are connected.Yes if cluster circuit board looks ok,then also it can be faulty.Somewhere there is minute short or burn on board then such prolem arises.
Also check the fuse box.One under hood and other under dash.Inspect each and every fuse and see if all are fine or not.

Where is cluster for speedometer lights


The "cluster" means all of the things you see under the plastic cover in front of the driver, the 'gauges'. The term is a reference to the 'instrument cluster' including speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, idiot lights, temperature gauge, everything.
Get a second independent opinion since this is very unusual. Most likely you have a blown fuse.

Temperature gauge, fuel gauge and speedometer not functioning correctly , temp gauge states overheating , speedometer does not register proper sped , fuel gauge always says empty


Faulty instrument cluster. GM has had many problems with their instrument clusters and this is one of them.There has been a recall untold,that if your vehicle is not over 7 years old and have less than 70,000 miles on it they will replace it at no charge.GOOD LUCK!! Section 13-01: Instrument Cluster—Conventional 1995 Thunderbird, Cougar Workshop Manual REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Instrument Cluster Removal and Installation
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) .
  1. Remove screws holding instrument panel reinforcement (017A28) .
  1. Remove screws holding instrument panel lower shield (045G02) .
  1. Remove fasteners holding steering wheel column as outlined in Section 11-04 . Gently lower steering column.
  1. Remove fasteners holding the instrument panel finish panel (044D70) and gently pry off.



  1. Remove four instrument cluster retaining screws. (Do not remove screws from the instrument cluster main lens (10887) and instrument cluster mask (10890) ).
  1. Slide the instrument cluster (10849) to the right of the instrument panel opening and unhook the instrument panel harness from the back of the instrument cluster .
  1. Remove the instrument cluster from the instrument panel (04320) .

Speedometer/Odometer Federal law requires that the odometer in any replacement speedometer (17255) must register the same mileage as that registered in the removed speedometer . Since the speedometer mileage cannot be reset on this unit, affix odometer sticker to driver's door pillar and record original vehicle mileage. Removal
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) .
  1. Remove the instrument cluster (10849) as outlined.
  1. Remove seven screws retaining the instrument cluster mask (10890) and instrument cluster main lens (10887) .
  1. Remove speedometer assembly.
Installation
  1. Position the speedometer assembly to the instrument cluster back plate (10848) and install.
  1. Position the instrument cluster mask and instrument cluster main lens to the instrument cluster back plate and install the seven retaining screws.
  1. Install the instrument cluster as outlined.
  1. Connect battery ground cable and check the operation of the speedometer .
