The fuel pump might be working but it is not priming. When you turn on the vehicle, the pump sends fuel under pressure to the injectors, to "prime" or have fuel present to be able to start engine. Without it there will no fuel available to start it. You are manually priming the engine, and the fuel pump is taking over from there. Check connections to fuel pump and replace if necessary. It is not an inexpensive repair

1994 Astro van. It only starts with the gas held pedal pushed way down and then it runs. Astro stutters to a halt when gas pedal is released at idling speed. It happens when cold or hot. What could cause...

There are a few things that could be ailing your astro van, here are some directions you can take for diagnosis:

1. Check that your fuel injectors aren't clogged or worn out. You can do this by running a fuel injection cleaner through your engine when you have less then half a tank of gas in it, or you can take it to a service store and have them do it. It generally costs between 20 and 80 dollars.

2. It could be that your fuel pump is not working properly. This also can be helped by some fuel injection cleaning, however, if this is the problem you will need to replace your fuel pump. You can check to make sure it is at least operational by getting under the car while a friend turns the key to the "on" position, but not starting the vehicle. You should hear either a "woosh" or a "click, click" type noise that lets you know your fuel pump is working.

3. It could be time for a tune up. This is generally an inexpensive way to take car of your car and should be done once a year. Get new spark plugs, new spark plug wires, a new serpentine belt, a new O2 Sensor and possibly a new distributor.

You can tell if it is a "timing" or "spark" issue when you rev up the engine. If you give it gas really quickly and then let it go you might hear a "popping" noise sort of like popcorn, which will tell you that your engine is not firing properly.

Try these out and then ask again if these do not solve your dilema.

Engine shutting down

It is very likely that the ISC of your car is the culprit. The underlying problem your car has is an overload of energy--the AC turning on is the breaking point. For more information related to this that is very helpful is this handy diagnostic article:

This should help!

underneth the intake manold is were your fuel injector poppet nozzles are, more than likely the fuel line hose that goes thru the back of the intake is split and leaking fuel underneth the intake manifold if you check the fuel pressure you will find that the fuel pressure will drop down to 0 psi as soon as the fuel pump shuts off and it should hold pressure
