Question about Ford Focus

1 Answer

I have a 2000 Ford Focus that the key won't turn. In order to remove the ignition cylinder, the key needs to be turned to the accessory position. If the cylinder is frozen and the key won't turn, how do you get it out so it can be replaced? Does it have to be drilled or is there an easier solution? I'm looking for instructions on how to remove a FROZEN ignition cylinder so I can do it myself!

This could take some patience but it will work. Get some glass cleaner in a spray can. Spray liberally into the lock cylinder. Then using a small hammer or something with a little weight apply turing pressure lightly while tapping the key. Remember lightly. Then once its turned you should be able to get the key to turn. Remember to be patient. It could take up to 15 minutes but it will work. Use an aerosol spray cleaner. These work the best. Good luck.

Security light flashes key won;t turn

Sounds like the ignition lock cylinder has gone bad. A pretty common problem with GM vehicles. Try tapping it with the handle end of a large screwdriver. Don't be afraid to give it a good whack. Then try the key. If you get it to turn replace the lock cylinder immediately. The key needs to be in the run position in order for the cylinder to be removed. If it can not be put in the run position it makes removal a lot more difficult.

2001 ford taurus key won't turn ignition

The steering wheel was turned when the key was removed. So when you try to turn on the key, turn the wheel one way and the other way to release the pressure on the key. The key should turn ok.
Hope this helps.

Key won't turn in ignition

This problem is related to stuck up or cracked ignition cylinder. There are many other ford focus users facing the same problem. In some cases wiggling the key in the ignition helped but in most of the cases the ignition cylinder has to be replaced. And the new key has to be re-programmed.The cost of all this stuff is near to $300.Some users claimed this problem to the local ford dealers and they go this problem solved by the dealer but in some cases the car owners paid $300 for getting this problem solved. But first you can try bit of wiggling the key in the ignition and check. Also apply some wd-40 spray in the key ignition hole and let it remain there for few minutes then recheck by wiggling the key and check. ---------------------You can click this link below and read what others have to say about this same problem of " key won\'t turn in ignition on 2003 Ford Focus". http://www.carcomplaints.com/Ford/Focus/2003/accessories-interior/key_wont_turn_in_the_ignition.shtml --------------- That's it.

Hi there. my friend is stuck on the road and she can put the key into the ignition but cant turn it, the steering wheel is locked. she has tried everything... whats goin on? 2000 ford focus

Very common issue for this model. She needs to buy a buildable ignition from the dealer and get the key code with her vin # so she can make it match her anti theft key, then the ignition lock cylinder needs to be drilled out to remove it.

If your Ford Focus is not starting, and you know the battery and alternator are good, the problem could lie in the ignition system. The ignition switch is a whole cylinder inserted into the steering column that connects to the starter motor. When you change an ignition switch, you are also replacing the key.

  1. Remove the dashboard panel below the steering column in your car; it should be screwed in place. Remove the steering column's upper cover by releasing its clips with a flat-head screwdriver.
  2. Look for the audio control switch---a small device sticking out of the steering column that acts like a remote control. If one exists, release the switch's plastic locking tang with the screwdriver, and unplug the electrical connector to remove the switch.
  3. Loosen the steering column by releasing the locking lever, and remove the steering column's lower cover by pulling out the screws with the screwdriver.
  4. Use your ignition key to turn the switch to the left---the position that would activate the accessories but not start the car. Insert the screwdriver into the hole in the top of the cylinder to depress the detent spring, and pull out the cylinder with the key inside.
  5. Insert the new key into the new ignition switch, and line up the switch inside the steering column so it's in the same place the old switch was in when you removed it. Make sure the detent locks into place; then turn the switch so it's in the "Off" position.
  6. Replace all the covers and panels you removed to access the cylinder, along with the audio control switch, if applicable, in reverse order of

Things You'll Need:
  • Small flat-head screwdriver
  • Ignition switch and key

Tips & Warnings
  • Older Ford Focus models may have a different method of removing and changing the ignition switch. Check an automotive guide for your particular year and model.
  • Always disconnect the negative (black) battery cable before working on the ignition or any other electrical component of your car.

I hope helped with this (remember rated this help) Good luck.

Ford Focus 2004 - key won't turn in ignition

My key will not turn in my 2000 ford focus has anyone had this problem and not had to replace ignition

Will the key go in and out of the ignition? If you can take the key from the ignition, I would use WD40 and lubricate the ignition lock until it is almost overly lubricated and take the key and push it in the lock and tap the end of the key into the lock with a hammer (remember, I said TAP). These things might get your car ignition to work long enough to get your car ignition into the ON position. at that point removal of the ignition cylinder is very easy. if you can't get the key to turn go to this page to see about drilling out the lock so it will turn. http://www.autosafety.org/2000-2005-ford-focus-ignition-lock-cylinder.

Go to this website and get in contact with Tousley Ford. They have great prices on ford parts if you are in the USA.

I just changed out the ignition cylinder in my 2002 Focus and it was a five minute job because I could get the old cylinder in the ON position and didn't have to drill it out. and Tousley ford did me great on the price!
Good luck.
