Question about 1996 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

Engine will not start. Spray carb cleaner directly into throttle; will start but will die right away. Step on gas, but still die. Can it be bad fuel pump, filter, or bad line? where are they located?

Why does it die when I give it throttle?

Hi Roger:
For an engine to run it needs the correct mix of fuel and air.
When you give it throttle you are giving it more air, and the carb is supposed to deliver more fuel.
If it dies, then the carb is not doing it's job so I'd start by cleaning the carb. Even a spray cleaner might fix it. Also, if there is a drain then flush the carb and try again with fresh gas.
If there is no carb and it is fuel injected, then I did not have enough info to begin with.

2003 Ford focus idles high in park but fairly smooth. however when i put it in gear it lopes up andd down as if the bad. the code i got was b1318 any tips

Could be a lot of things from clogged injectors, fuel pump, fuel filter, throttle body dirty....... quite a few things.

I'd started with two of the most simple things first.

Get a can of carb cleaner and locate to throttle body, remove the intake hose exposing the inside of it. You should see a round or oval disk that moves when you press the gas pedal. you can rotate this by turning the throttle linkage by hand. using the cleaner and the straw that came with it spray all the exposed inside surfaces. then taking a rag with your hand spray some of the cleaner on it and with a finger and the rag wipe the areas down allowing the rag to pick up the carbon, dirt and other stuff.

Once you do this start the engine and while its running slowly rev up the engine (not too far) and spray a small amount int the throttle body onto the throttle plate and other inside parts. If you spray too much the engine will want to die, just give it a little more gas to keep it running .

Once you do this reassemble everything. Oh yea is the air cleaner new? If not replace it!

The other thing you can do is get some gas additive made to clean the fuel injection system. Talk to the guy at the parts store and ask what he thinks is the best stuff for the job. You can also do a search on the web for the best stuff to use.

Hope this helps.

Chevy Tahoe 2000 Z71 won't start!

Just for the record, its a throttle body not a carb.
Sounds like the injectors are not getting power or a ground signal from the computer.
You would check them with a meter or low voltage test light.

Durango starts sometimes. then acts like its getting no gas and dies. if i stomp on gas it will keep running till i let off. bad gas ? fuel filter ? fuel pump?

I would suggest starting with the less expensive solutions first. If you pull the air intake hose off the throttle body and open the throttle with the engine off look down inside if it is black try spraying it out with throttle body cleaner make sure to spray it out good. Afterwards start it you may have to keep your foot on the gas for a few minutes to make sure it doesn't stall then take your foot off the gas pedal and see if it stays running if it does your throttle body just needed cleaned. Note do not use carb cleaner use throttle body cleaner only, carb cleaner can damage the sensor in your throttle body.

87 325 runs good when

It's the automatic choke!

The choke is "closed" or barely open... When cold, the engine needs a RICH mixture (more gasoline, less air). When the engine warms up, it requires a LEAN mixture (less gas, more air).

It is probably creating BLACK tailpipe smoke ... that means unburnt gasoline. (Blue smoke is OIL, white smoke is WATER).

Put the parking / emergency brake ON.
1. Remove air cleaner assembly from intake, use a carb cleaner spray or throttle body spray cleaner and spray just a little. (AutoZone $5)
2. Find the accelerator2.gif arm under the hood.
3. start car, rev the engine to make sure how to operate the accelerator from under the hood.
4. Carefully spray into carb / throttle body and work the accelerator ... don't let the engine die...
5. Watch out for "backfire"... it may create a small flame out of the carb. It will extinguish itself in one second.

6. You may need to do this two, three times.
7. Add a "complete fuel system2.gif cleaner" to your next tank of gas ($8).

That's it! ... pretty cheap, too.

Hope this helps!
