Question about 2002 Toyota 4Runner
Find your tire changing tools. Take the tool with the hook on the end and attach the longer tool to it. Find the oblong shaped hole on the back bumper. The hook end will go in here and connectt to the spare tire winch. A flashlight aimed through the hole will help lining it up. Attach the lug wrench to the end of the hook tool. Rotate counter clockwise until the wheel is down. Remove the part going through the center of the tire and remove the tire.

Here is how to fix it:
-The tire will lower about 2 inches then stop.
-Lower the cable another couple of inches. Lie on your back under the tire and lift the tire weight off the cable.
- With your third hand (get a helper - I used one hand to lift the tire) reach up and over the tire to the wench down tube. You will feel a wire connected to a square piece of metal. Pull on that metal piece, it should pop back for you releasing the tire.(You may have to pull up-and-out if it has a little rust on it.)
-While you have the tire down, clean up the mechanism and apply some grease.
This is a really stupid idea from Chrysler ! , but if you get rust on this you have to go through all of this, ridiculous ! , but that is what you have to do.

SOURCE: spare tire stuck
We had this problem on another vehicle (GM) and there was a secondary lock (if the cable ever broke) that holds the tire up. We had a damaged cable and had to get the spare tire off. If the same issue, the recommendation from the manual was to use a jack and piece of wood and jack up on the spare tire rim some and then release it down to get the secondary lock to release. We tried by hand and it didn't work, the jack trick worked fine. I wish we knew earlier.
