Question about 1990 Toyota Corolla

2 Answers

My 1991 Toyota Carolla has a dodgy clutch, it is getting harder to get into gear and I have to drop the clutch to change (jerky change), the clutch pedal is now starting to vibrate slightly and the clutch is getting quite warm as well. (Note: the clutch is not slipping at present) Do I need to replace the clutch plate (I think the teeth are worn down) or would it be something else?

There is a small amount of play, it feels quite jerky when it bites. It could be worn as I tend to drop the clutch a lot, but now when I try and drive smoothly it is quite jerky. Other people have trouble driving it and end up grinding the gears due to this.

The thing with the teeth you are referring to is your flywheel. That is what your clutch engages with to transfer power from engine to transmission. Your clutch is the disc & spring assy, and yes it could be on it's way out by sound of it. How much free play do you have at clutch pedal?

I have a 91 toyota celica that will not go when put into gear.

Have you had problems with clutch slipping up to this point? Like engine revving up and no change in speed while driving. Like going into 4th or 5th gear, letting clutch out, giving gas, and feels like no response? Engine just revs up? That's a slipping clutch.
If that's your problem, you need a new clutch.

To answer the first problem you need to check it for codes. To do this you need to jump TE1 and E1 terminals in the diagnositic plug then turn the key on. The check engine light will flash trouble codes. Let me know what codes you get and ill tell you what they mean. As for the second problem. Are you sure the clutch is good. Because you are describing a bad clutch.

Will not shift into 3rd until 55mph its an automatic what is possible cause?

Check your auto transmission levels. Slow, often jerky, gear shifting is often accompanied by a bit of a jolt when putting it into drive from park or neutral. When fluids are low the torque converter impeller has to work harder to get pressure up and therefore it is slower at shifting to the next gear . Low transmission fluids also lead to poor fuel consumption.

Getting harder and harder to place into gear. Also, when the clutch is disengaged (pedal down), I will hear a louder noise, sounds like something is rubbing on something

It seems like the clutch pressure plate has gone, not releasing the clutch plate once the pedal is operated.
The noise you hear, is it a screeching one or is it like the gears rubbing eachother.
If its a screeching noise thn its the release bearing and if its a heavier grinding noise thn its the gears.
Guess you will have to replace the clutch pressure plate, its highly recomended though to replace the pro-kit,i.e the clutch plate, pressure plate and the release bearing.
Good luck.
