When you lowered the tank. you pinched a wire. Go back and raise it back up and fully inspect wiring and you will see a burn mark or some indicator of arcing.

No don't lower it if you fell that you found it. Why do you feel that the ignition has a short now?

I'm not sure I know where you 'see' a dead short? What circuit is it? Tell me what happens. Is this when you turn the key on? The lights?

When you say 'shorting out battery' do you mean the battery just goes dead when you try to start?

  • Craig Butler
    Craig Butler Jul 20, 2009

So, you have a battery problem first. Get a battery charger on it and see if it will charge up. Then we can sort out the various circuit problems you may have.

That could have drained the battery I guess. Let it come up to full charge and we'll go from there...

Can't you leave it on the charger overnight?

Low fuel light on gauge doesnt work

lamp burned out, ?
but does the fuel guage work 100%
and at what tank level do you expect the lamp to come on.?
did you read the FSM on this, its covered
or alldata.com?
free.
http://www.jeep4x4center.com/knowledge-base/index.htm?utm_source=cj#service

on this car, the PCM reads the fuel level then sets the fuel guage
and if the level (voltage from tank sender) is below a specific
voltage , it glows the lamp, low fuel
so if the fuel guage works, and the lamp is dead, the lamp is burned out. (or conn. bad to it)

Honda accord 95 gas gauge not working

Hi, The Sending UnitThe sending unit is located in the fuel tank of the car. It consists of a float, usually made of foam, connected to a thin, metal rod. The end of the rod is mounted to a variable resistor. A resistor is an electrical device that resists the flow of electricity. The more resistance there is, the less current will flow. In a fuel tank, the variable resistor consists of a strip of resistive material connected on one side to the ground. A wiper connected to the gauge slides along this strip of material, conducting the current from the gauge to the resistor. If the wiper is close to the grounded side of the strip, there is less resistive material in the path of the current, so the resistance is small. If the wiper is at the other end of the strip, there is more resistive material in the current's path, so the resistance is large.First of all, the guage needs a 12 volt electrical supply to operate. The entire system extends from the fuse block inside the front passenger compartment, through a resister (which lowers the voltage), on to the float assembly inside the gas tank then on back to the fuel guage itself,

First , test the fuse responsible for the fuel guage. Note: this fuse is usualy responsible for the fuel guage only or several items.

If the fuse checks OK, then a check must be made to troubleshoot the entire length of the system or until the problem is located.

If the fuel tank sending unit is faulty, the fuel guage can read any position, including full or empty. The sending unit can be tested by first checking to see if the unit can be removed from the fuel ttank by either partially or fully lowering the tank.

Prior to removing the sending unit, check to ensure there is voltage at the wires leading into the fuel tank.

With voltage confirmed, remove the unit and check for continuity at each end of the float arms travel .with a multimeter If the unit does not check good, replace the unit. Note: Sometimes after a long time in service the strip of resistive material can wear through and plainly be seen.

If the unit checks good, there could be a bad ground somewhere along the line.

If all else checks good, then the fault most likely is a bad fuel guage. The guage also can be tested by applying varying degrees of voltage (0-12VDC ONLY) to the teminals at the rear of the guage.

If the guage is bad, it must be replaced.

I hope this information has been of assisstance to you,
Randy Atchley

Just filled the gas tank in my 2006 f-350 turbo diesel super duty (6.0), started the truck and the guage showed a full tank. Drove down the road about 1/10 of a mile and the guage dropped to dead empty...

A loose connection on the sending unit could cause the problem but also moisture in the tank in cold weather could also be a factor in which i would add fuel line antifreeze to a full tank of fuel..........Hope this helps you out.

Fuel waring light stay on. Tank is full. what is the problem

Fuel gauge working correctly?? Sometimes these low fuel lights are triggered by the fuel guage, which is triggered by a float that is in the tank.

Seems to me the indicator/sensor/relay, which is probably located in the fuel tank.... shorted out. I know this sounds strange, but rock the back of the car as if you were checking the shocks/struts, when the car has a 1/4 tank or lower.

My fuel guage won't work, any suggestions? On a 93 thunderbird

Dear Dead Gauge.........I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.....fortuneately this is a very common tsb that fails on these vehicles. The gauge itself rarely ever fails....but the sending unit in the tank always does.... Thats right.... I said in the tank....Easiest way to go about this is to simply siphon the tank to empty....then lower the tank to the ground with the aide of a floor jack.....or bring it to your local trusty mechanic......either way....after the repair is done you can be assured that your gauge will be working accurately for quite some time.......if ya need anything else please get back to me...HOPE I COULD HELP!!!

Refueling problem

The fuel sending unit could be bad or siezing up once the float gets near the top. The way they work is the higher the float the or lower the float the resistance changes and the information is sent back to the fuel guage. It could either be the sending unit which is located in the tank or it could be a bad fuel guage. The chances of the issue being the fuel guage is a lot more rare though. Good luck and keep me posted. If you found this solution helpful please rate it when you get a chance.

Thanks - Tech101
