Question about 1983 Oldsmobile Delta 88

1 Answer

Ignition Problems Currently building demolition derby car, having trouble getting the starter and ignition to work. It is a 1982 Olds Delta 88, wondering what the orange box on the fender-well is for, has the two purple wires from the starter, then a few more from the distributor and ignition hot wires. my current rig up is running to the harness that was originally on the steering wheel. Red to Pink wire turns igition on, Red to Pink to Purple hits the starter, nothing works anymore though. Help!

Try forgetting about all the wires. Run a hot lead to a push-button to energize the small trigger wire on the starter. Run another to a toggle, then to the battery terminal on the distributor and it should work fine...I wouldn't do it this way if I was going to drive it daily but for a demo vehicle that's just fine.

97 olds 88 runs rough first few seconds, when you shut it off it will not crank. Had the ignition control module tested and says that it is good. Any ideas?

Will not crank how ? When you turn the key to the start position does the starter engage and spin the engine ? , A crank no start condition . Or nothing happens . A no crank - no start condition . I assume by your statement ( Had ignition control module tested ) That you have a crank no start condition . in which case have you tested input from the crank sensors to the ICM and PCM . What engine does your Old's have ? 3.8 L
Is there spark at the coil's ? Pull plug wires off of the same coil , have someone crank the engine over , Is there a spark jumping from one coil tower to the other ? If so , you don't have an ignition problem , fuel more then likely . Is your SECURITY light lit on the instrument cluster , if it has anti-theft .

86 olds Delta 88, just had trans rebuilt. Ran for a day and now won't start. Not the battery because lights and radio come on. Not making any noise when key is turned. Is this the starter??? Could...

It may just be loose wires like ground wires. The transmission has a wire that goes to the body of the car which serves as ground. Some of the wires including the ground may have come off.

Adjust timing on 1985 olds delta 88 307 engine

Timing set a 20 degrees as factory specified.

Keep Backing off of timing 1 degree at a time until you don't have a pinging during acceleration.

Laging valve timing can not be fixed by simply advancing the ignition timing.

Check to see that you have less than 8 degrees of valve timing and you will be ok.

Hope this tip helps

My 1993 Olds 88 wont start cranks but wont kick over. Fuel prob

3.8 are known for ignition trouble but first use the fuel release valve located on top of engine under a screw cap to see if your getting fuel. It takes 4 things to make engine run fuel spark air and compression. But most likely the Ign control module or crank sensor. So try this
1) check the fuel pressure
2) check for spark
3) compression test
