Question about 1995 Cadillac Eldorado

1 Answer

My heater core burst; replaced it, my engine overheats ever since

Please help with any suggestion. I was told my head gaskets leak I have a northstar engine 95 Eldorado. And that's it. spend 2500 for a rebuild or put in a new engine.

I can'teven sell this car for more that $3000. so it's not worth it to put that much into this car, except that the body is nice & it runs good other than the over heating.......

I have to keep adding water.

I tried Thermagasket, it helped a little. I can drive about 10 miles.
If I start going up in temp over 220 I switch the auto airconditing to heat, then it levels off to 195 but then creaps up again. switching from cold to heat helps to run a little farther.

There's no white in the oil or water. I've been running only water no antifreeze since I drained it for the themagasket treatment. I also replaced the thermastat with a new one. We drilled a small hole at noon & at six oclock so water keeps flowing.

Any ideas other that a head gasket problem.

Thanks for the tips. I'm under the impression that the fans are on all the time when the Air is on auto. When the air is off the fans comes on just after 221 or so.
We were told that so that's why we did not direct wire to the 12 volts. What & where is the coolant sensor? What does that do? I don't know about a fan clutch?

I forgot to mention right around this time we had to change the harmonic balancer & tensioner & belt. I believe the heater core went after that.

Where Can I buy a can of Block Seal K and W? Thank You!

Hi,I am Ron,have you noticed,is the cooling fan or fans working? They should cut on at about the 221 or 229 degree mark, and back off at about the same, give or take a degree, also if they are not working look at cooling fan fuse, and cooling fan relay. If these check good, see if the fans are ok by direct wire hook up to 12 volts. If they are ok,replace the coolant sensor. Now if it has a fan clutch, replace it with a new one.If you have blown head gaskets, you can try a product called block seal by k and w.Follow the directions on the can of k and w to the letter.this should be the problem solved. If I can help..roniecon@gmail.com

Sounds like the heater core is leaking. Overheating an engine can warp a cylinder head and blow a head gasket. This is a costly repair. Have a mechanic replace the heater core.

Rule out leak from water pump. What engine is it - 3.0 3.8. Could be intake manifold gasket. Have the cooling system pressurized, about 12 lbs. and look for leak, bubbles.
check oil for coolant in oil also. Possible head gasket leak.

That is typical that the heater won't work well when the engine is overheating. Often because of low coolant, also the htr. core is the highest part of the coolant system. Bite the bullet and check for a head gasket problem-a compression test should tell you.

My 1998 Crown Victoria had steamed the passenger side windshield, digital thermostat never indicated that the engine was hot, i smell antifreeze, water leaking inside passenger side by glove box and a

It sure sounds like the heater core, especially if you have water leaking inside the cabin. The two heater hoses only go from the engine to the firewall, and do not go into or through the firewall. They connect to the heater core right at the firewall.
Check carefully around the back side of the engine and the heater hoses, though. If a freeze plug is leaking, water will be dripping off the bottom of the engine. If it is leaking before the firewall, that would not be the heater core.

First you need to purge the trapped air out of the system. Go to a shop that has evac/fill equipment and tehy can do it for about $75. It is ahrd to get air out. park uphill and rasie front of truck as high as possible, and keep cap loose during warm up. It will burp air. Then tighrten cap & let it cool while keeping the reservoir full during cool down. Repeat at least once. Make sure hose from rad to reservoir is tight at both ends to avoid sucking air in.

report results.

please rate if helpful

No heat is a sign of trapped air.

Car overheated and lost all power. how do I get it to start?

ENGINE NOT GOING TO START IF GET TOO HOT FIRST THING I WOULD REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP THEN ADD COOLANT UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL CORRECT THATS WHEN THERMOSTAT OPEN UP AND TOP HOSE HOT.CHECK FOR LEAKING RADIATOR HOSES CHECK TOP RADIATOR HOSE CHECK BOTTOM RADIATOR HOSE.CHECK FOR LEAKS AROUND THE RADIATOR LOOK DOWN BELOW COOLANTS FANS CHECK FOR LEAKS AT RADIATOR CORES OR LEAKS AT THE RADIATOR PLASTIC SIDE CONTAINERS. CHECK FOR LEAKS AT WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE AND CHECK FOR LEAKS AT THE HEATER HOSES AROUND ENGINE BLOCK TO THE HEATER CORE HOSES. THERE IS A REASON CAR OVERHEAT.IF CAR OVERHEAT WHILE DRIVING YOU HAVE FAULTY THERMOSTAT OR LEAKING OUT COOLANT OR BLOWN HEAD GASKET.IF ENGINE OVER HEAT WHILE SITTING DURING A LONG IDLING PERIOD.YOU COULD HAVE FAULTY COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR OR FAULTY COOLING FAN FUSE OR RELAY.HOT WIRE COOLANT TO SEE IF IT RUNS IF NO REPLACE FAN MOTOR. IF YES FAN MOTOR COULD HAVE FAULTY WIRE OR PCM FAILURE. CHECK ENGINE CRANKCASE IF OIL LOOKS LIKE MILK SHAKE ENGINE HEAD GASKET LEAKING.

Anit freeze is leaking on the passenger side of the floor, both the dodge caravan 2000 and the gmc truck 1997 are now doing it, possible tampered with but not sure how... cannot find fix it manuals online...

Is this inside the vehicles or outside?  From your problem I take it that it is on the inside of the cars.  This can only be by a hole in your heater-core and is a big job usually as half the dash may have to be taken out to replace.
If you don't need a heater in the car you can take the two hoses from the firewall and join them together to eliminate the heater core. This is a temporary fix only and may get you going.
I doubt it that anyone got into your car and poked a hole in your heater core.  You are probably not using a good coolant level or is old and your engine is overheating.
A bad water pump will leak at the bottom - there is a hole there and if it's leaking have it replaced - is a sign it's going bad.
Don't leave anti-freeze (Glycol) Coolant on ground as animals find it sweet and will drink it to their demise.
Good luck - hope this help.
Always shut your vehicle off before it nears the redline (coolant) or the heads may (will) warp and or crack. Always use new head-bolts when replacing a head-gasket, and tap the head-bolt holes with a tap and die set, cleaning the holes really well.
Always blow the old head-gasket material out of your heater core when replacing a blown head-gasket.
MX6 and MX3 V6 engines have valves that if you plane the head too much will make the timing belt too loose - you may have to use a head-saver to insure specs.
Good luck.
Hope this helps.
Remember, if you have a leak of anti-freeze then you are getting air into the system which will make the car overheat, but that's for another day.

I am losing coolant, not from the radiator and not from the resevoir, where else could it be coming from. The resevoir is empty in 1 week after fillup

you could have a blown head gasket and coolant could be leaking into your combustion chamber.
rent a radiator pressure tester and see if the cooling system will stay at constant pressure. If the pressure drops you have a leak, and it could be your gaskets. pretty costly to repair.
make sure you have not blown the seals on the engines water pump. when they go out, the burst disc on the pump open and gush coolant everywhere.
