Hard to start because the glow plug circuit is not working. Sounds like the glow plug is defective and the relay is opening and closing. Replace the glow plug.
THAT SOUNDS MORE LIKE THE VARIABLE SPEED SENSOR! IT IS LOCATED ON THE TRANSMISSION! SOME OF THEM HAVE A SPEEDOMETER CABLE ATTACHED TO THEM, AND SOME DON'T! THEY WILL HAVE A 2 WIRE PLUG THAT IS ATTACHED TO THEM!
When is the last time a tune up was performed on the vehicle? I would get some amsoil engine foam, and use it as described. Also get some fuel system cleaner and use that as well and go from there. Thank you, Lee
Even though the glow plug goes out it does not mean the all the glow plugs are working,
Remove glow plugs.
With a set of jump leads connected to a battery connect the earth lead to the body of the glow plug and touch the top of the glow plug where the wire is connected with the pos lead the top of the glow plug should heat up and turn red.
Problem is the detent springs for 4/5 gear have gone weak .
If you are handy its take the top off the gearbox from inside the car and you will see the plug then the springs and balls .
If not its a transmission shop job.
I have a 1998 Bighorn 3.0L if the wrong grade of oil is used in the motor it miss fires and runs rough, due to the injectors being oil pressure controlled, I have heard of extreme cases causing a failure to start when cold. good luck
