After about 8kms when the engine warms up the speedo & odometer stops working.... after cool down ... starts working again for a short time, ...suspect wiring problem in engine bay... any ideas

Wow... it's been a while since i've had the honour of working on a car like this! err.. One thing to note is that when warming a Mondial up from cold one of the exhaust pipes will produce more vapour (right hand side) than the other until the engine and exhast get up to normal operating temperature. This is obviously more noticable on cooler days, and is caused by the different lengths of the manifolds from the engine to the exhaust. This shouldn’t happen on a Mondial t due to the longitudinally mounted engine.
This can have a detrimental effect on the dials etc... check that the heat shields are intact and not missing! these produce a huge amount of heat... if they are missing ensure that the wiring harness is not damaged by heat.

Hope this helps

I need an electrical control schematic for the HVAC system on a 1986 Mercedes 420 SEL. The mechanic fixed the ac but he doesn't have an electrical diagram to tie the ac controls in to it since it is so...

If he is bypassing the Climate Control unit to engage the compressor he didnt fix it he just bypassed the safety features to save you money. There are sensors on the dryer that read temp and pressure, good time to replace the dryer when you replace those, there is an internal and external temp gage for the system 1 under wiper assembly and the pump interior behind the glove box. You get those checked and i am sure once replaced or checked the system will work as designed. If you still wish to bypass your safety features he will need to rigg a bosch relay as to not kill the compressor so it can cycle on and off and rig to a switch he can mount somewhere in the car that you can reac, I suggest using the rear dome light switch.

1986 mondial, just put a new starter in and still having problem starting. After driving for a period of time and then parking for a minute, the car won't start again until the car has been sitting for...

OK, we are nearer the facts.
Most cars have more than 1 of the same type of Main Power distribution relay. Locate the Starter Solenoid Relay and Interchange it with 1 of likeness, from a Circuit, such as the Headlights.
The Battery and Alternator, connections must be checked for Tightness and Cleanliness. The supply cable from the Battery to the Starter solenoid, ditto, the power feed to the Solenoid from the ignition start switch, and the Metal bridge from the Starter Solenoid to the Starter Motor, ditto. The Ground connection from the Battery or common coupling to the Engine casing. Being an Electrician you will understand the circuit principles.
Having done all these things, then there should now be no further problem.
However, as was described, this is a Rebuild Starter and there is a possibility that the Solenoid Copper internal contacts are not of good substance, and React to Engine heat which eventually disables it from energising when required after a journey. Or the possibility that the Start Solenoid of the Motor, is already in a state of progressive failure.
Food for thought.

Motor turns off

The fan draws allot of amps (30+) from the alternator which puts a load on the engine, if the throttle valve and idle speed control air-bypass valve are sludged up it will cause a stall because the system can not react fast enough to raise the idle to handle the extra load of the fan, clean the throttle valve and air bypass valve, this should do the trick
