Question about 2003 Lincoln Navigator

1 Answer

My 2003 LIncoln Navigator liftgate is not working. I had a response that it could be the sensor/switch that senses if the liftgate is closed, but the door does not open when using the overhead console button, the FOB, or when you try to open it from the outside of the liftgate. You must manually push the liftgate up or down. Would the sensor/switch control that also? Thanks!!

I had already checked the fuse, made sure that the automatic liftgate was set to "on", and reset the system. It turned out to be the battery. Thanks for your help!!

Check relay and fuses, make sure that automatic liftgate is on. You will have to to the command center and go through the defaults and make sure that the system is on. if you are not comfortable doing that, disconnect battery for approximate ten minutes, this will reset the system defaults.

Electronic's , aren't they great ? There is a control module (power lift gate module ) Switch (sensor) inputs to the module . Lift gate obstacle detection strip right and left , liftgate cinching motor ,liftgate unlatch motor .Liftgate drive motor assemblys left and right . Probably a bad switch feeding bad voltage signal to the control module ! Like one of the obstacle detection sensors maybe. Could possibly have DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes stored in the control module. Your best bet maybe to have the dealer run diagnostic's on it , check for codes . Need a factory or professional type diagnostic tool to do this. I would say you mite be able to check the sensor inputs to the module , don't know what or how much voltage > Some of these circuit's are a five volt signal from the module . Ohm check the obstacle detection sensor ? I still think best thing would have it checked for DTC'S . Almost forgot about the thing opening when you close another door , All the modules on the vehicle are connected on what is call a serial data network . Doors have modules inside as well .could be commanding that door open some how.
If you would like to see what your up against , here is a web site for free wiring diagrams Enter vehicle info. year , make , model and engine size. Under system click on body & accessories , then under subsystem click on power liftgate. Click the search button ,then the blue link. The second diagram down starts liftgate diagrams . Good luck !

2004 lincoln navigator ,doors will not open rear hatch will not unlock

The door locks are controlled by the vehicle security module (VSM). It gets power from fuses 30, 5, 6, and 40 in the central junction box (CJB). You say you checked these and all are OK. Therefore the problem must be in the door lock actuators, the door lock relays, or the door lock switches. I doubt that all of these are defective, so the VSM may be defective.

The liftgate is controlled by the power liftgate module (PLM), althogh the motor in the liftgate glass actuator is controlled by the VSM. The PLM gets power from fuses 105 and 5 in the CJB. If the PLM is assumed to be OK, the source of the problem could be the liftgate unlatch motor, the liftgate cinching motor, the L/R liftgate obstacle detection strips, the liftgate home position switch, the liftgate fork bolt/detent switch. or the power liftgate open/close switch

The rear suspension is dropping and it stays stuck, is there a motor that needs to be replaced or is this an electrical problem? The automatic liftgate stopped working and the dash indicates that the...

This liftgate issue is the reason your Air suspension is not working. The ride height is determined after the tailgate and the doors are shut. The suspension is designed to keep the cargo loading height low to make it easy to load.

You need to find the switch in the liftgate area that is not sending the signal that the liftgate is closed. It can be a plunger type pin like in the doorjams or a extended plastic arch that pivots when the lid is shut. Check around the hinges of the liftgate.

If you find and press the pin switch and the dash indicator does not go off, you may have to remove the switch and cross the wires to get a response. You may have lost a grounded connection from the switch. The Air suspension uses Vent solenoids to release the air from the system. Since the dash shows the problem, most likely the solenoid will work once it gets the signal from the liftgate. Right now it is being told to deflate and vent the air.

I hope this is helpful to you. If you can not find a contact switch ask a Lincoln partsman for a Diagram of the location and the price and availability of the switch.

My liftgate ajar warning light comes on after car is started. however liftgate is latched. any ideas?

try rolling down a window or leaving a door open, shut liftgate hard. see if it still shows liftgate ajar. on my explorer the seals in door and windows shut so tightly that it was almost impossible to get the gate closed completely with doors closed and windows up.

if this doesn't help then you might need a new switch on it.

Sounds like the sensor/switch that detects if the door is closed or open is faulty, you can get the part from the dealership and replace it yourself or take it into the dealership or any repair shop and have them check it out and fix it.

Replacing the switch for Liftgate Ajar on 03 Expedition

I found that if you spray some penetrating fluid (not WD-40) such as move-it or liquid wrench on the switch, it will repair the problem. You spray the fluid on the switch and open and close the gate repeatedly for about ten times and the contacts will be cleaned and working again. This also works for the doors. The switch is located in the latch mechanism so spray the fluid in that area.

SECTION 501-03: Body Closures 2003 Expedition/Navigator Workshop Manual
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Power Liftgate Module Removal and Installation
NOTE: Prior to removal of the power liftgate module, it is necessary to upload module configuration information to a diagnostic tool. This information needs to be downloaded into the new power liftgate module once installed. For additional information, refer to Section 418-01 .
  1. Remove the rear quarter trim panel. For additional information, refer to Section 501-05 .
  1. Remove the power liftgate module.
    1. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
    1. Remove the bolts.
  1. NOTE: Once the new power liftgate module is installed, it is necessary to download the module configuration information from the diagnostic tool into the new power liftgate module. For additional information, refer to Section 418-01 .

Principles of Operation
The power liftgate is controlled by the power liftgate module.
The power liftgate module receives inputs from:
  • glass position switch (determines the ajar status of the liftgate glass).
  • forkbolt switch (determines the primary position of the latch).
  • detent switch (determines the secondary position of the latch).
  • home switch (determines the power cinch status).
  • power liftgate control switch (activates the power liftgate from the interior of vehicle).
  • pinch strip switches (determines if an obstacle is detected between the pinch strip and liftgate).
  • instrument cluster module (activates and sets the options for the power liftgate).
  • optical sensor (determines the direction, travel speed and obstacle detection of the liftgate).
  • UBP serial communication link.
The power liftgate module sends outputs to:
  • liftgate motors.
  • power cinching latch system.
  • liftgate chime module.
  • body security module

The liftgate consists of the following components:
  • liftgate window glass latch
  • door lock actuator (power liftgate only)
  • liftgate latch
  • liftgate handle
  • liftgate latch remote control (power liftgate only)
  • liftgate ajar switch
  • chime module (power liftgate only)
