They have probably the worst overdrive clutch setup I've ever seen in those transmissions. When I first saw one my question wasn't why it didn't work but why they work at all!!! Likely you need to have the unit taken apart and rebuilt.

It can be many things.make sure to check transmission fluid.if all is good.your governor valve sticking.or got worn have sticking or binding accumulator valve. 3 -2 control valve - tv limit 1 -2 or 2 - 3 shift valve train - sticking or binding throttle valve and plunger.2 -4 servo seals leaking - damage or worn 3 - 4 accumulator piston.the 2 3 4 clutches worn or the 3rd roller clutch is damage or missing bearings.Try changing transmission fluid and filter.put some of the transmedic transmission conditioner in fluid.dont over fill tranny.if you got sticking shift valves .it will loosen them it will shift better.if it dont help you have internal transmission problems. .

I have a 97 grand prix gt 3.8 wont shift into gear unless it has warmed up to the first line on dash

An old solution is to thin the g/box oil with some Auto fluid but call your mechanic or g/box place & ask if that is ok with your g/box.

My 2001 jeep grand cherokee wont shift into 4th it only goes to third what would cause the 4th gear to not engage

There are several things that could cause that.
> Replacement transmission not equipped with overdrive
> Overdrive solenoid in replacement transmission defective
> Overdrive control circuits damaged or loose pins or connections.
> Gear shift linkage or cable out of adjustment
> Transmission range sensor malfunction or out of adjustment

Since you have a computer-controlled transmission, it would be better to ask the onboard computer that will probably get a much more definitive answer.

1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. Mileage 132000. 1 to 2 shift normal. Trans. will not upshift into 3rd. gear, goes to 4th. It will downshif to 3rd. from 4th. When the trans. get hot from stop and go...

If tranny fluid is clear and at normal level, then the issue is with the transmission - it is getting ready to go sayonara.

Better get that fix before you get stranded.

2001 Pontiac Grand Prix Gt not shifting into OD

this trans is the 4T65E. It needs a 4th clutch hub. The splines strip off around 120k or more because they weren't hardened from the factory. The new ones have the hardened splines. The trans needs to come out and be partially torn down. I've fixed alot of these. Change the EPC solenoid while you are there. They wear and hang up causing intermittent harsh shifts

You can drive them forever without changing the hub but you'll never have 4th gear

1999 transmission

the 4th gear clutch shaft has very fine teeth that wear over time, if vehicle has high miles, this shaft may have failed, a sprag may have failed, the 4th gear selenoid may be bad, the 4th gear clutches could be fried, the valve body may be leaking / venting clutch apply pressure, the range selector may be off causing the VCM to believe you are in 3rd. Good luck!
