It only need to be replaced on a belt drive when the edges are frayed or the belt is cracking. A chain drive will need replacing when it begins to stretch, has to much play by moving side to side. If you live in a state that requires a yearly inspection they would normally notify you if it needs replacing. You can Google the year make an model for vehicle specs as to which drive you have.
