My 99GMC1500 z71 has a rattling noise in the rear end when I take my foot off the accelerator at low speeds. sounds like marbles in the hubcaps. Also, when backing out the driveway in the morning, I get this one time CLUNK from the rearend.

  • rudydreese Jul 21, 2009

I have had the brakes and wheel bearings checked at an NTB shop and they could not find anything wrong.

The clunk that I hear in the rear drive shaft only happens once in the morning when backing out of driveway. It feels like one axle is not meshed in the rear...

This problem has to do with the rear axle or differential. the truck will have a hopping effect at times when driving down a smooth road, similar to a tire that is out of round. I have had the tires checked at two different shops and found no problem with the tires.

Is the rattling noise from the exhaust, if yes you need a new silencer or exhaust check.

Hi there,

Is this noise comes from the rear wheel?

There is a good chance you just need to replace the brakes on the rear.....

f the noise doesn't go away, jack up the rear of the car, grab the tire at the top and bottom and try to wiggle it. A very small amount of play is ok, any more and you need to have the rear wheel bearings replaced. make sure to check both sides for a comparison to each other.

Good Luck!!

thanks

It is a humming sound that increases in intensity with exceleration but quits when acceleration is let up or speed has leveled off

Sounds like you have a bad wheel bearing or the rear end is low on gear lube.Check the gear lube very soon so as not to ruin the rear end.

Marble noise from rear end

Had the same sounds, and so has my friend with the same year jeep. We both had work done on the rear wheel bearings, and the sound returned for both of us. I took mine in to the dealer and was informed that the bearings had worn the location the bearings actually fit into the housing into an oblong shape and they replaced the entire housing (under warrantee, no cost to me, so it wasn't a scam).

96 Golf 2.0GTI 8v knocking noise from rear when accelerating

its probably your bump stops. the vw ones are very soft. i bought ford escort (the shape after the xr3) ones and cut them a little down to fit. i think the noise is either your shock touching or the sound of the tire scraping the body of the car. hope this helps.
