1989 GMC Sierra 3500 loose tilt steering column

I have a 1989 GMC Sierra 3500, with a loose tilt steering column. I removed the steering wheel, lock plate, and turn signal assembly, but still can't get to the bolts to tighten it. How do I do this?

Without taking the tilt mechanism off you can only reach 2 of the 3 bolts. If you use 1/4 in. socket on 1/4 in drive with 6 in extension you can just get at the left bolt. If you remove the tilt spring you can get to the bottom bolt. To remoce tilt spring retainer use standard Phillips.

You do not have to remove ingnition cylinder for this. Look down under housing and you will see torx like bolt heads. A 1/4 in socket will just go on and you can tighten the two out of three bolts. It may be that you have to go at it at an angle but it works.

Excellent tutorial here that helped me when I had a loose steering wheel on my 1988 Deville.

This one is not from an 89 Eldorado, but all GM Tilt/telescoping steering columns from that time are virtually identical:

Tilt steering wheel loose 1989 chev truck

Not a fun job sorry!
1) Remove horn button. 2) Remove steering wheel. 3) Remove turn signal/cruise lever and cancel cam. 4) Remove tilt pins with a pin puller(about $10) 5) Tighten the four loose screws that hold tilt mechanism to the column.
Be happy you do not have airbags.

How to tighten 1989 steering column?

There is a u-joint inside the steering column if you have tilt wheel. Which I don't think that I have ever seen a steering column get loose if there is not tilt wheel. If there is not tilt wheel then there are two bolts that hold the steering column up against the bottom side of the dash. You will just need to tighten these two bolts. If you do have tilt wheel, then it is going to require taking the steering column out and replacing the u-joint in the steering column.

this is a tilt column and you need a special tool to push the lock ring down and remove the c clip on the shaft without hurting yourself.
