I have an oil leak at top of motor and car didn't make this whining noise at first I checked the power steering and its full could the whining come from the leaking issue


Does the whining volume increase when you turn the steering wheel back and forth? If so, your power steering pump is on its way out. The "oil leak at top of motor" is not very descriptive. Is the color of the oil the same as the color of the power steering fluid? If so, it is likely that leak is coming from your power steering pump. If not, I would need more information to determine the cause of the leak. What color is it? How much is leaking? Does it leak when the car isn't running, or only when it is running? Where exactly on top of the motor is it leaking? A hose? A seam in the engine?

Oil on undercarriage but none on the ground


It may have been leaking around the oil filter. I would keep an eye on the oil level.

I have not seen a power steering unit located on top of an engine usually they are on one side of the motor. I will need more info like is it drops of fluid or a spray pattern of oil or spatter???? where on the motor besides top is the oil top front top back??? Please don't take this wrong , I just have questions without seeing it its somewhat difficult to actually know what's going on with the oil and color of oil is it thin or thick fluid???

Metal shrinkes when it's that cold causing this,will have to just do what it takes to keep going.

My truck is leaking oil bad, thought it was coming from oil pan gasket but it's not and the top half of the engine is spotless yet the whole underside is covered in oil what else could it be?


The best way to find the leak when you have an excessive amount of oil on the undercarriage, is to clean it good and then recheck for the leak in a day or so

I have an oil problem I am losing oil and do not know where it is going There is no oil the cement or on the side of the motor


see how dark and oily it is around your exhaust pipe tip. at 11 years old your valve guides and piston rings are beyond their normal service life and oil may getting past them and out the tail pipe.

look inside your air cleaner. old motors often pump oil through the PCV valve into the air cleaner box.

look at the back of the car itself. a bad seal can dump oil which turns into a fine mist which then collects as a layer of slime on the back of the car, like road dust.

Oil leak


You have to differentiate whether the oil leak is from the engine or the tranny. After determining where the source, you must isolate the specific area; timing belt area, the middle-between the engine and the tranny. This can be cheaply determine by placing white piece of paper underneath the engine and observe the droppings of oil. Oil leak repair can be costly-especially an oil starved engine, so isolating the source is essential and tear-down might required.
Due to the age of the vehicle, possible sources are the camshaft seal, crankshalf seal, oil pan gasket, crankshaft end seal,distributor o-ring, and valve cover gasket.
In addition, other oil leaks can come the transmission, and power steering pump and rack'n'pinion. Best to raise the vehicle and inspect undercarriage of vehicle.

Inspection interval I

BMW Inspection I (return to top) Undercarriage
  • Change engine oil and filter while engine is at normal operation temperature.
  • Check transmission for leaks.
  • Check rear axle for leaks.
  • Visually check fuel tank, lines, and connections for leaks.
  • Check condition, position, and mounting of exhaust system. Examine for leaks.
  • Check power steering system for leaks.
  • Check overall thickness of front and rear disc brake pads.
  • Examine brake disc surfaces.
  • Clean brake pad contact points in calipers.
  • Grease wheel center hubs.
  • Check steering for absence of play, condition of suspension track rods, front axle joints, steering linkage, and joint disc.
  • Check front control arm bushing for wear.
  • Check brake and clutch system connectors and lines for leaks, damage, and incorrect positioning.
  • Check for free movement of the parking brake cables. Adjust parking brake if necessary.
  • Check all tire pressures (including spare). Correct if necessary.
  • Check condition of tires (outer surfaces (left/right)), tread wear and pattern; In case of uneven tread wear readjust wheel alignment if required.
Engine Compartment
  • Read out diagnostic system
  • Check engine cooling system/heater hose connections for leaks.

  • Check battery electrolyte level and add distilled water if required.
  • Perform batter load test.
  • Check lighting system, i.e. headlights, foglights, parking, backup, license plate, interior (including map reading lights), glove box, flashlight, illuminated makeup mirrors, luggage compartment lights.
  • Check instrument panel and dashboard illumination.
  • Check all warning/indicator lights, check control.
  • Check turn signals, hazard warning flashers, brake lights, horns, headlight dimmer/flasher switch.

A leak that large is should be very very easy to spot.

Put a piece of cardboard under your engine after it has cooled down and see where the oil falls.

Than you can look from above to see where the leaks is realative to the engines critical oil sealing points.

Hey...you could have a rusted out oil filter too! Or...something major like a engine seal leak. Your oil pan could be punctured too!

If you go to an oil change place they will inspect the undercarriage as part of their service.....maybe they would tip you off as to whats leaking? It wouldn't cost much more or less than a visit to a mechanic for a checkup.

I have a power steering leak in my 2006 Ford Freestar...what troubleshooting process should I go through to detect the source of the leak?


HI:
The power steering system is very basic, consisting of the power steering pump/reservoir, the steering rack/pinion assembly, and the connecting hoses. To figure out where the leak is, you need to either get the van up on a lift, or degrease the entire engine and undercarriage, and then see where the general leakage is coming from. The most common fail is on the pressure hose, or out one of the ends of the rack/pinion unit. So, get it cleaned up, or have some eyes on it , and hopefully you will spot the drip!
