Hi , there is a special tool required to release the mechanism catch so you can push the roll over protection bars back to the opperation position , if you have a local dealer to you, they should be able to reset them at little or no cost , hope this helps , regards mark .

Roll over bars released. reset down what rearms them?

hi its just spring activated, just follow instructions below to reset the roll bar1. Raise rear headrest to its highest possition
2. With a screwdriver, remove the plastic cover that is located under the headrest between the roll-bar.
3. Reach down into the opening to locate the metal tab that has locked the spring loaded roll-bar into place.
4. Simultaniously push the tab in (towards the front of the car ) while pushing downward on the top of the exposed roll-bar to compress the springs. Push all the way down until the bar locks into place.

Whatever you do, do NOT pull the red handle that is located under your rear seat. I had a similar dilemma with my 99 convertible top. Someone had the bright idea of pulling the red handle "just to see what it was" and it dropped all of the motors in the trunk that power the convertible top. The dealer is the only entity that can align the motors after you manually drop them (this is an extreme measure if you have no other way to put your top up) and the cost ranges from $150.00-$250.00. There is a notched allen wrench fitting right at the rear view mirror that, if manipulated correctly will manually bring your top down. Unfortunately if you use this method too many times you will snap a cable from one of the FOUR other motors located inside of the convertible lining. That mistake cost me $1500.00. Other than this problem I adore this car. The handling and power are unmatched by any domestic. It has the manual/automatic option for tranny, which makes it fun just cruise on a windey road. Absolutely love this car, but unfortunately overheated it last summer (badly) and now fear the worst case scenario for the engine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

The window position is monitered by the softop control module. It sounds like the glass is very dirty and drawing too much amperage during window operation. The soft top is electro hydraulic. The roll bar is operated normally with hydraulics but it is mechanically released in an emergency situation. 1st make sure your windows are clean and the express(one touch operation) is working-the soft top will not function properly if the windows are not synchronized. Next be sure your roll bar works-hold swith in up position to lock roll bar rams in if they have been deployed. next put your top all the way up. untill windows roll up and try it with the engine running and trans in nuetral- if it still does not work mechanically secre rear of top with tool provided in your tool kit the owner's manual will tell you how to do this. good luck

1997 bmw convertable trunk will not open

I vaguely recall reading something in the owners manual of my '97 328 regarding the trunk and the master key. Something about locking things with the master key so that valets cannot open your trunk with the valet key.
Try unlocking the driver door or the trunk with the master key (the original key that had the LED flashlight in it.

Clk top will not go back up seems dead..all fuses checked

It is normal for the roll bar to rise when top is down. It seems like the rear valance cover is not secured and the soft op does not understand what position it is in. There is a way to manually close top. it is stated in your owners manual. also I would try to close top with button(assuming your vehicle will start and the battery has good voltage) start car and try to operate top down and try pushing on rear cover also make sure the retractable cover in trunk is extended to compress operation switch

How to raise and lower the 328ci convertible top manually

I just bought a 1996 328iC (the "C" is for convertible). I bought the car with the knowledge that the roof needed a motor replacement (~$300 for the part alone + ~1-2 hours labor) and that I would need to open and close the roof manually if I wanted to take advantage of the convertible part of the car.

After some trial and error, I figured it out and now it takes me <30 seconds to open or close the top (manually). Note: my top is a semi-electric roof, which I think is what came on the 328iC, you have to lock into place after you close it.

Here's what you do:
1- open all of the windows
2- unlock the roof by turning the latch between the sun visors.
3- push the front of the roof towards the rear of the car - be sure to push in the middle of the roof, where the latch is.
4- lift the back of the roof up off of the roof storage compartment
5- while holding the back of the of the roof up, lift up the roof storage compartment door
6- let go of the back of the roof so that it drops right into the storage compartment
7- push the rest of the roof into the storage compartment
8- close the storage compartment door.

To close the roof, follow the steps above in reverse order. Remember: this is a German car, so you use a little bit (or a lot) of force and you won't hurt it (I think it actually likes it ;-D ).

Good Luck!!!
