Question about 1997 Oldsmobile Bravada

Shifter will not shift out of park

I have a 1997 oldsmobile bravada that I pulled the trans and rebuilt it, which during that time the shifter moved freely. I put the trans back in and started it and the shifter will not shift out of park, I unhooked the linkage off the trans and still nothing, I have brake lights so the brake switch is good. Also after I had it started 3 times on the fourth start all my dummy lights and head lights came on but it will not turn over, no click no nothing. I am lost at this point. Please help me. thank you

Sounds like you have a ground or othere electrical problem. The interlock solenoid uses a separate switch from the brake lights. Double check all of your connections, make sure that the grounds are all good, including the battery-chassis ground.

How do you adjust the shift cable on a 1995 gmc jimmy, wont go into reverse or park.

On the 1995 Jimmy, the shift cable can come loose on the mount on the side of the transmission where the cable meets the trans. When it slips, the alignment goes off and causes the driver to not be able to put the trans into park. If you take a long stick you can push the shift arm on the trans to the park position and your trans will go into park.....what you (and I) really need to know is how to take the shift cable mount apart and reset it.

Have a 1997 ford thunderbird is stuck in park, cannot shift out of there a shift-lock override button on this model? the fuses all check out o.k., but the button that needs...

no override button. if all the fuses are good, then if i remember there is a switch by the shift lever that when you step on the brake it enables you to move the shifter.good luck

I have a 1972 oldsmobile cutlass I got the trans mission rebuilt in december last year i drove the for a couple weeks and drove fine the next time went to drive it i would not do anything so i let it sit...

first check the fluid, then the shifter connections at the trans, otherwise you will have to pull the pan to check interior linkage, but it should be under warrantee

Will not shift out of park

Does the shifter move? Also you have to check under the hood and see if the shift cable is moving the linkage when the shifter is moved. If the shifter moves but not the linkage the shift cable is bad. If both move you have an internal problem in the trans or if you hear noise as if the transis trying to work you may have a bad cv joint. Good Luck!

Transmision Shifting Problem

Was the fluid you drained red or black? did it smell like trans or gear oil? With linkage disconnected, could you put trans in park by moving the lever on the side of the unit? Oil condition is likely a separate issue...most "blown" transmissions generally have normal operation of shift, it just dosen't do what you tell it to. two things likely going on are: linkage problem and likely in need of fluid/filter change.

Key will not come out. Battery light stays on.

your shifter is not aligned properly this condition indicates that the shifter has placed the transmission in park but just barely it needs like maybe 2 more millimeters of travel.

Shifter problem

If you take the center console apart and look at the shifting lever, you will be able to tell how it works and figure out what is happening with it. you have to push in on your brake pedal first, of course, and thta will actuate a solinoid in the center console. The solinoid may be faulty or you may have a pinched wire causing this.
You are not an idiot by any means I would guess. You should be able to figure this out. It is a pretty simple assembly.
If you are parking on a hill then you could be experiencing the transmission parking paw having pressure on it, which will cause you to not be able to shift out of park. If you are parking on a hill, I would suggest that you use your parking brake before you put your vehicle in park. This is take the pressure off the parking paw.
