We are replacing the camshaft sensor on our 2004 Neon, we took the battery cables off ok but can't find the screws on the housing to loosen up, is it the bolt down behind the battery that we have to take off to get the battery out?

if you put a 6-8 inch extension bar on socket it will bring it above the battery and make the bolt easier to remove

Walking camshaft on 99 dodge neon

  • 1 Park your Neon on a level surface. Engage the parking brake. Open the hood and loosen the bolt on the negative battery cable terminal and pull the cable from the battery.

  • 2

Remove the Neon air filter by undoing the side clips and lifting the cover of the air filter off. Pull the air filter from the bracket. Undo the clip on the air filter hose and pull the hose off the inlet. Use a socket wrench to loosen and remove the four bolts holding the air filter bracket in place and pull the bracket from the engine

    3

  • Locate the camshaft position sensor. It will be at the rear of the cylinder head, centered on where the air filter housing was about midway down. It will look like a black plastic square (4"x4") and have four bolts holding it to the engine.

  • 4

Disconnect the wiring of the sensor from the wiring harness feeding into the car's electrical system. Press in the tabs at the sides of the connector and pull the two halves apart to do this.

  • 5

Remove the four bolts holding the sensor in place and remove the sensor from the engine.

  • 6

Clean the engine of any gasket material from the old sensor by scraping the surface gently with a paint scraper.

  • 7

Install the new sensor by placing it in the same position as the old one, replacing the bolts and then connecting the wiring harness. Replace the air filter bracket, hose, filter and cover. Reconnect your battery and you are done.

Need to find Cam Position Sensor on 2004 Neon SXT

It isn't something you can just disconect, but it is fairly easy to replace. I just did mine about 2 weeks ago and it took less than 30 minutes. You just remove the battery so you can get to it, and it is right there on the side of the engine. After you get the battery out take out the 4 bolts holding it on, then disconnect the wire after you have removed it, then hook the new one on the wire and bolt it on. Replace the battery and you are good to go.

Cam Shaft Sensor Problems

Had the same problem before on my 04 Neon SXT...camshaft sensor is on left side of engine block, take out the battery and to the left of it (face car) is the camshaft position sensor. To change it you'll have to move a few hoses but its plan to see there on the left side of the engine...pretty easy remove and replace. Fixed my problem of car not going above 2k RPM when i replaced the sensor.
