1992 GMC Sierra Erratic speedometer

My speedometer has become erratic. It is anywhere from 20 - 30 mph higher at times and at other times well below the actual speed I'm traveling. Occasionally it appears to stabilize but in those instances is still off by some significant amount. I've replaced the speed sensor and determined that is not the problem.

Additionally, when I apply my brakes or turn signals the speedometer and tachometer both take a dip back towards zero.

Just to clarify your solution. Are you saying that i need to check for resistance or volts?

How do you identify a short in a connection and what are the two end points in the connection?

I took the instrument cluster out previously to see if there was anything immediately obvious. There wasn't. Am I checking between the fuse input and the output behind the dashboard?

Looking for shorts in not something I have a lot of experience in.

I would go to the local salvage yard and search for the same instrument cluster out of the same vehicle...trying to fix your broken one at home is very complicated if you don't know how to do electrical work...My local pick your part junkyard charges $30 for any instrument cluster and $15 on half off days...If you don't know how to remove it from a junked vehicle ask someone in the yard to help you out...another option is to look on ebay for the same used part and have it shipped to your door...I see the 1992 GMC Sierra junked often here at the four different salvage yards I visit

Sounds like you have a burnt capacitor, short fuse, or short wiring in going to control panel. You should check each fuse, wires, and connections with a multi-tester. Check the resistance of each connection. Don' forget about headlight, turn signal, and 4 way wiring as well. There is an obvious short or loose fuse in the system

Speedometer on my 95 gmc sierra 4.3l v6 is registering right at 4 mph higher that what I'm actually going help please.

If you have recently changed from stock wheels and tires to aftermarket, the problem could be as simple as your wheels turning more revolutions per mile due to a tire height change. That would cause the speedometer to register high.

My speedometer seems to be giving me the wrong speed when i'm on the highway. It would say i'm doing 90mph while i would be doing 65 mph. How can i fix this ??

What is most likely happening is that the tiny electric servo motor which is what actually moves the speedometer needle is going bad. I've seen several where the speedometer or tachometer become erratic, inaccurate, or stick in place. If this is the case then the dash assembly has to come out and be repaired. There are several companies that can do this but I usually send ours to a GM dealer and have them send it out to get fixed. Usually they replace all the servos for all the instruments and I haven't seen one fail again after being repaired.

Boss has 2005 Yukon, says speedometer shows random numbers (ie, 40 mph while stopped or 40 mph when doing 60. Intermittent problem sometimes fine.) Any helpful hints appreciated.

The speedo in electronic and can have various circuit board problems. I've had to cars with erratic speedos and in both cases the dealer said replace them and big buck bills. I found a shop that repairs them and charges $100 buck and free shipping back. About a 4 day turnaround.

Although you didn't mention it, the speedometer probably bounces also. Replacing the speed sensor on the side of the transmission should solve both your problems. Good luck
