Question about 2006 Jeep Compass
I was just leaving a shopping parking area to enter onto the street when the left front wheel suspension collapsed. I was driving straight ahead at about 2 mph on very smooth macadam. After the collapse, the wheel was turned to the left and the bottom rim vertically tilted outward. Brake fluid poured out onto the pavement. I found a bolt that had failed but I'm not sure what it was, The bearings for this wheel had been replaced several weeks before by a local Jeep dealer. What could have caused this failure? Is the bearing repair unrelated? The car has been faithfully maintained. My wife is now frightened to drive the car when it is repaired. I'm a little uneasy myself. What if any recourse do we have?
Thanks for any info.
Photograph everything and find exactly what came apart. Likely the brake hose was torn out when it came apart so that's secondary damage. When replacing a bearing hub, it's necessary to remove brake assembly and are working in the area where you have the problem but without seeing exacacly what happened, I can't think of anything further to tell you. Get an outside opinion on the cause from someone who can actually look it over.
Glad that did not happen while going down the road!!
