Question about 1995 Toyota MR2

Can't get rear brake pistons back in to get new pads in. Tried turning anti-clockwise but very stiff.

You need to replace the rear calipers. You may also need to replace the rear flexible lines. I would have thee entire brake system flushed by a service center as well.
The MR2's ABS system is particularly hard to bleed without the proper tools. Let someone else do it, it is cheap enough.
DOT4 is for vehicles rated for it. DOT4 can eat certain brake seals depending on the composition. You need to use DOT3 unless you are absolutely certain that the system is rated for DOT4. So, unless your system is comprised of Wilwood lines, calipers, master and the ABS has been removed YOU WILL DAMAGE YOUR SYSTEM USING DOT4 FLUID!

If they are turning type try clock wise and if worst comes to worse crack open the line and then bleed them, usualy stuck calipurs mean trash in the lines and once a calipur is stuck it needs to be replaced, you can also gravity bleed the fluid in their and then put in dot4 silicone based this will stop the trash from affecting the calipur. just dont let res go dry while bleeding.

Changing rear brake pads on 2008 Ford Taurus and a threaded rod located within the caliber piston prevents compression of piston back into the caliber.


You need a special tool for rear pads. The pistons have to be turned in, there is either slots or holes in the piston for the tool to fit in, then just turn the piston clockwise and push a little at the same time.
Just turn them in far enough for the new pads to slide over the rotor.

The piston of the rear brake caliper will not compress to fit the pads on the rotor...


On some vehicles with rear disk brakes the piston also is self adjusting to keep the pads close to the rotors. This piston screws in to back it off. Turn the piston counter clockwise to back it off.

Have taken apart but cant get new or old pads back on now. not enough space and part that should move back to make space wont seems to be jammed or siezed. have tried letting out brake fluid but didnt...


  • To install: Front
  1. Compress the piston of the disc brake caliper.
  2. Install the brake pads and caliper assembly.
  3. Lubricate the guide pin. Tighten the guide pin to 16-23 ft. lbs. (22-31 Nm).

REAR :
  1. Pull out the pad springs and then remove the pads and shims.

To install:

  1. Clean the piston end of the caliper body and the area around the pin holes. Be careful not to get oil on the rotor.
  2. Carefully turn the piston clockwise back into the caliper body (this can be done with a pair of needle nose pliers). Take care not to damage the piston boot.
  3. Coat the pad contact area on the mounting support with a silicone based grease.
A special tool is available to rotate the caliper piston

Do not press the piston into the bore as performed on the front disc brakes. Due to the parking brake mechanism, the caliper piston must be turned into the bore.

Which way do you turn the piston clockwise or counter clockwise to retract the piston in when installing new brake pads on a 2006 Ford freestyle?


Clockwise-on the rear
I would open the bleeder valve first, push piston in,then screw parking brake in.
You need to flush your brakes every couple years,anyway.
After you install new pads,ratchet brake up by hand.

Can not get new brake pads on the rear of 172 clio, they are the correct pads too!! 53 plate


The rear callipers contain the hand brake mechanism, they need to be wound back to install the new pads, have a look in your local car part suppliers/accessory shop, the correct tool is about £10 or so. You can wind it back with a screw driver and a "G" clamp, they need to be wound clockwise when you look at the piston through the calliper frame, use a large screwdriver in the notches in the piston to turn it, sometimes the screwdriver needs to be sideways, this will be fiddly as you can usually onlt turn 1/4 of a turn at a time, squeeze the piston back with the clamp after a turn or so and repeat untill the piston is back enough to allow the pads in.

YOU NEED TO REMOVE THE REAR WHEELS.REMOVE PARKING BRAKE CABLE CLIP FROM CALIPER DISCONNECT PARKING BRAKE CABLE.HOLD THE GUIDE PIN WITH A BACK UP WRENCH AND REMOVE UPPER MOUNTING BOLT FROM THE BRAKE CALIPER.SWING THE CALIPER DOWNWARD AND REMOVE THE BRAKE PADS.TO INSTALL NEW PADS.YOU HAVE TO RETRACT PISTON INTO THE HOUSING BY ROTATING THE PISTON CLOCKWISE.PUT EVERYTHING BACK VISA VERSA.

Just taken the old brake pads off the car and the pistons wont move in order to get the new pads on


With the new pads in place, loosen the bleeder valve a few turns while applying pressure to the pads. A small amount of brake fluid will likely spray out as the pads and pistons move, so have a pan or a rag ready. Once the pads are flush with the edges of the caliper, retighten the valve - making sure that the pads don't move.

get a c clamp to wind it in if that dont work id say its hooped,seized or somthing get a new caliper

ase mechanic:

those calipers in the rear have slots on the piston right. that means you have to turn the pistons in clockwise. sometimes a pair of needle nose pliers put in the slots and turn will work, otherwise there is a rear caliper brake tool to turn those pistons in.
