SOURCE: need location of brake light switch on 2005 malibu

These are usually located on the front of the brake pedal post. The slightest pressure on the pedal causes this switch to trigger your brake lights. You'll have to get underneath the dash and look up. It's not comfortable to be under there, but should only take you a minute or two to locate it. With everything quiet you should be able to depress the pedal slightly and hear the switch clicking. That might help you locate it quicker. Good luck!

Can't get brake lights to go out on a 2006 sterling tri axle

Most vehicles use a plastic switch mounted in such a way as to be activated by the brake pedal.
Traditionally, the "swing" or "travel" of the pedal is up and down, and the downward movement allows a plunger on the brake light switch to extend and activate.
Check and see if yours is that way.
These switches can fail, or come undone, causing your symptom. God bless your efforts.

Brake light seems to have an electrical short

This would be due to a faulty brake light switch. the switch is located above the brake pedal and is actuated by the arm the brake pedal is attached to. See diagram below of typical brake light switch location, the switch is #4.
