2011ford escape Does the entire smart junction box have to be replaced due to a left turn signal which clicks too fast but which works fine even if it blinks fast?

The bulbs and all connections have been checked out and I've been told the directional and brake lights could all go out at anytime if I do not replace the entire box.

No it doesn't Jack. What a sales manager and me will tell you is 2 different things. It is a computer, just like the one you are typing posts on. They all die. Heat kills them since there are no moving parts. The manager wants your money, I already have to much to do. I do electrical and fix/bypass parts on car computers. Yeah, the whole thing could die tomorrow, but so could your desk top/lap top. Your smart box could have a malfunction. It could be just a corroded plug on the bottom of it also. I have a question, Jack? what did they charge you to diagnose this?

2010 Ford Escape XLT. The turn signal flasher where is it located on a 2010 escape xlt?

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved to sub category.

Great advice and education on Ford SJB from our professional auto technician and electronics guru.

Jeff Armer Mar 23, 2022
They normally flash fast when a bulb is burnt out . There is no flasher , SJB - smart junction box - fords BCM - body control module turns the flashers on and off .

Principles of Operation

The smart junction box (SJB) monitors the multifunction switch position by sending multiple voltage reference signals to the multifunction switch. When the multifunction switch is in the LH or RH TURN position, or the hazard lamp switch is engaged, that input signal is routed to ground.

When the SJB receives an input from the multifunction or hazard switch indicating a request for a turn signal or hazard lamps, the SJB then supplies voltage to the appropriate turn lamps.

Hooking up a factory or some other type professional scan tool to check for codes in the SJB would be the first step in a diagnoses for this .

B1499 Lamps, Left Turn Signal Failure If a turn signal is inoperative, Go To Pinpoint Test O .
If a turn signal is always on, Go To Pinpoint Test N .
B1502 Lamps, Left Turn Signal Short to Ground Go To Pinpoint Test O .
Test N .
B2282 Left Turn Signal Switch/Circuit Short to Ground Go To Pinpoint Test N .

Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop.

Fast flashing though, check the bulbs and in particular, the marker bulb on the left side. And never use LED bulbs in a vehicle that wasn't made for them.

Would you like to take a crack at this one Jeff. I told him, but he doesn't believe me. I remember that technical site with the guy who turned the headlights off inside the workshop to not blind another tech, and the problem on the scanner, or oscilloscope went away.

I have a 2010 Lincoln MKX the left side blinkers do not work where is the Flasher relay located

Doesn't have a flasher relay , the SJB - smart junction box (computer) controls the flashers . If it were a flasher relay none would work .
The smart junction box (SJB) monitors the multifunction switch position by sending multiple voltage reference signals to the multifunction switch. When the multifunction switch is in the LH or RH TURN positions, or the hazard lamp switch is pressed, that input signal is routed to ground.
When the SJB receives a request for a turn signal or hazard lamps, the SJB supplies voltage to the appropriate turn lamps.
The timed on/off cycle is determined by the SJB and is set to flash approximately 80 times per minute if both the front and rear turn lamps operate correctly. If an individual turn signal lamp is inoperative, the SJB flashes the remaining turn lamp approximately 160 times per minute.

Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop. They will hook up a factory ore professional tool a read DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes in the smart junction box . Don't take it to a auto parts store an expect them too. They can not read these type code's .

Where is the turn signal flasher located on a 2005 mustang gt?

Does not use a flasher , controlled by SJB - smart junction box , module - computer etc...
Turn Signal and Hazard Lamps
All turn signal outputs are controlled by the SJB. The multifunction switch and the hazard switch are hard-wired to the SJB. When the multifunction switch is in the left or right turn position, or the hazard switch is engaged, the SJB processes this information and outputs the appropriate command to the turn signal and hazard lamps. All turn signal lamps provide a lamp outage indication.

Rather then trying to guess your way to a repair , Take it to a qualified repair shop. Could have DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's stored that point in the correct diagnostic path .

Inspection and Verification
  1. Verify the customer concern.
  1. Visually inspect the following for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

Visual Inspection Chart Mechanical Electrical
  • Multifunction switch
  • Hazard switch
  • Circuitry
  • Bulbs
  • Smart junction box (SJB)

  1. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  1. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • check that the program card is correctly installed.
    • check the connections to the vehicle.
    • check the ignition switch position.
  1. If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating manual.
  1. Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
    • CAN circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to Section 418-00 .
    • No response/not equipped for SJB, refer to Section 419-10 .
    • System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the SJB.
  1. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Smart Junction Box (SJB) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index.
  1. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to Symptom Chart .
  2. Smart Junction Box (SJB) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index DTC Description Action B1342 ECU is Faulted CLEAR the DTCs. RETRIEVE the DTCs. If DTC B1342 is retrieved again, INSTALL a new SJB. Does the entire smart junction box have to be replaced to fix a directional signal which works but is 'clicking" too fast? Is there any problem with ignoring the problem (if it is a problem) ?

Most flashers are built into the hazard switch. If yours was traced to the fuse panel/smart box, but all the lights work. I would leave it. The states that they have to flash. Nothing about how fast or slow they go. I have a car that does the same thing. Checked all the lights, they work..Mine's the hazard switch though.

2005 ford freestar the power lock onthe drivers side will not work and my left turn signal is now out and it is not the bulb.

Do you know anything about automotive electronic's ? body control modules , ford's SJB - smart junction box. Do you own a professional scan tool that can read codes in the SJB ? Auto part stores can not read these code's . Do you know how to do automotive electrical trouble shooting ,using a DVOM -digital volt ohm meter ? If not , your best bet would be to take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop.
Principles of Operation
The smart junction box (SJB) sends multiple voltage reference signals to the multifunction switch. When the multifunction switch is in the LH or RH TURN positions, or the hazard lamp switch is engaged, that input signal is routed to ground.
When the SJB receives a request for a turn signal or hazard lamps, the SJB supplies voltage to the appropriate turn lamps.

You could by a used one off ebay or a remanufactured one . lot less cost wise. But you would need ford , mercury dealer program it . Yes $600 bucks sounds right from the dealer .
