When replacing a water pump , should you replace the thermostat,& housing?

Since you have it off, it would make perfect sense to change it. If the water pump is leaking or is bad for another reason, thermostats also have a lifespan and, unless replaced within the last couple of years, just change it for preventative maintenance's sake. Depending on what year your truck is, the new pumps have been upgraded to solve some inherent problems. The early pumps on LS series engines had, I believe, a 2-bolt thermostat housing and the later pumps have a 3-bolt housing, so you have to change the thermostat/housing. The thermostat and housing are a combined unit and can't be separated. It seems that the cheapest part is the original AC-Delco. Most auto parts suppliers are smart about this and don't even carry an aftermarket part. The new O.E.M. AC-Delco waterpumps used to come with the stat/housing already bolted to the pump.

Replacing water outlet housing unit on a 2000 alero 2.4l

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Drain and recover the coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System. 3. Remove the air cleaner assembly. 4. Disconnect the radiator hose and electrical connectors from housing. 5. Remove the heater hose from the coolant outlet housing (1). 5.1. Remove the exhaust heat shield. 5.2. Remove the nut from the exhaust manifold. 6. Remove the bolt which retains the power steering pump and set the bolt aside. 7. Remove the coolant outlet housing bolts. 8. For a metal housing to blow there has to be a problem with the installation of the unit as any pressure to do this would blow hoses and radiators first.. Most likely the problem will be trying to bolt up the housing on a bad surface or the incorrect fitting of the thermostat that is putting pressure in the housing. clean up the surface with a good emery/ sand paper. clean out the bolt threads using a thread tap to ensure that the bolts are not bottoming out. fit the thermostat with the body of the unit facing into the head Use a new gasket and gasket goo. fit properly ensuring that the housing sits on the mating surface all the way around. fit the bolts and tension correctly. Normally around 15-20ft/lb is tight enough

Cant loosen center nut on fan to seperate fan from water pump

Most fans have 4 bolts around edge where water pump and fan meet,,never knew of a center bolt...but hey find something new everyday....not saying your wrong but please check......

follow the water inlet pipe to water pump the thermostat housing connects to water pump this is for 2.4l engine you have to remove exhaust manifold heat will see the water inlet pipe going to water pump inlet thermostat housing.for the 3.1 engine follow top radiator hose to thermostat housing you have to remove air filter air duct and filter housing , you have to remove throttle body unit with coolant hoses, you have to disconnect accelerator cable, transmission down shift cables at the bracket bolts to throttle body.once you remove throttle body unit then you can see and remove the thermostat housing to replace need to buy new throttle body gasket,and new small coolant hoses connects to the throttle body unit.have extra gallon antifreeze dexcool on hand.

How do you remove water pump from it"s housing!

When removing the pump unit with special tool (some auto-parts stores rent them), TURN CLOCKWISE TO LOOSEN the pump-unit, counter-clockwise to tighten. The Torq Specs for the pump-unit is: 73 Foot Pounds. There are stop tabs on the pump-unit that mate with the tab stoppers on the main water pump housing unit. I had to re-torq by visually viewing where the stop tabs where after the first torq, don't over-torq or you will bend the tab stoppers on the pump unit. ALSO...the water pump-unit front cover requires a new rubber gasket (you'll have to order it through GM or use RTV silicone under the old gasket, which has a grooved fitting inside the front cover). The Torq Specs for the front cover (5 bolts) and water neck cover (2 bolts) is: 89 Inch Pounds. Those small bolts tighten normal, clockwise.

How do I replace the thermostat? Is it something I can do my self with no car repair experience?

The short answer is yes you can do this repair with little repair experience. Locate the upper radiator hose and follow it back to the block, assuming you have already gone and picked up the new thermostat and a seal and form-a-gasket. Once you locate this point on the engine where the upper radiator hose connects to the block you need to remove the radiator hose from the engine. After removing the hose, get the proper sized socket to remove the 2 to 3 retaining bolts that hold this mount to the engine and remove it. Under that piece you will find the thermostat. Take it out, paying attention to the direction the old thermostat is installed, clean off the old seal and sealing compound. Place the new thermostat in place then apply a thin bead of Form-A-Gasket to the cover piece and carefully lay the seal in place on that, make sure you line up the mounting holes. Place a bead of Form-A-Gasket on the motor side and then replace the thermostat cover and radiator hose mount. Once you have it tightened down securely re-attach the hose and fill the radiator. Test driver the vehicle after letting everything sit for about 30 minutes if you find a leak tighten the bolts near the leak to seal it up and the job is finished. Should take about an hour with drying time and test driving.

How to replace a waterpump on a 2001 olds alero 2.4 cam

Water pump is driven by timing chain idler and is mounted on the rear of the timing chain housing. Disconnect the neg. battery cable. Drain cooling system. Disconnect oxygen sensor connector.
Remove upper exhaust manifould heat sheild. Remove exhaust manifold brace. Remove lower exhaust manifold heat sheild. Loosen manifold to exhaust manifold spring loaded nuts. Remove radiator outlet pipe to water pump coverbolts. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold.
Pull down on the exhaust pipe to disconnect it from exhaust manifold bolts. Disconnect outlet pipe from oil pan and transaxle. If equipped with manual tranaxle, remove exhaust maifold brace. Leave lower radiator hose attached and pull down on radiator out look pipe to disengauge from water pump. Leave outlet pipe hanging.
Lower vehicle. Remove exhaustmanifold to cylinder head nuts. Remove exhaust manifold to cylinder head nuts. Remove manifould. Remove timing chain front cover. Remove timing chain tensioner. Remove bolts bolts securing water pump cover to cylinder block. Remove water pump to timing chain housing nuts. Remove water pump attaching nuts. Remove water pump and cover assembly. Separate componets as necessary.
If cover was separated from body during removal, join this componets with a new gasket and hand tighten bolts. Apply bearing grease to splines of water pump drive. Set body and assemble into position.
Install and hand tighten bolts securing cover to cylinder block. Install and hand tighten bolts securing cover to cylinder block. Installand hand tighten nuts securing body to timing chain housing. Lubracate outlet pipe "O" ring with antifreeze. (I use RTV) Connect outlet pipe. Install and hand tighten bolts. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification in the following sequence. I'll ad the torque spec. at the end but this is where if you tighten out of order something will break.
pump assembly to timing chain housing nuts.
pump cover to pump body bolts
pump cover to cylinder block bolts (Bottom Bolt First)
outlet pipe to cover bolts
To complete installation reverse removel procedure.
Torque specs are 19 in. or 26mm all except water pump cover bolts which are 124 in or 14Nm
I never torque the bolts just make sure there done in the right order.

Location of water pump

It takes a special tool, about $38.00 at NAPA. Very easy to get to the pump, 6 small bolts, it is on the "BACK side" of the motor, opposite end of the main pulleys and belts. Drivers side. the watre pump is driven by a small belt coming off the front cam shaft. easiest water pump I was able to reach , but it takes a special six fingered tool to grab the six lugs, and i belive it is a counter colockwise turn about a 1/8 of a turn, and the pump just falls out. the outer housing of the pump (pump cover) has a special neoprene gasket, which i reused. It was going to be a specail order part, this gasket did not come with the pump. this housing also has the thermostat in it, which has two seprate bolts and a seperate gasket for the thermostat inlet.

Heater wont work

is the thermostate coming from your intake any good its located were your upper radiator hose connects to your intake.under the water inlet housing. if its bad it wont close, if it doesnt close the water doesnt stay in the engine block long enough to heat up. if your a do it yourselfer remove the upper hose from your water inlet. now there should be two bolts holding down the water inlet they should either be 12mm or 1\2 inch remove these bolts. you will need a new gasket once removed or silicone. after removed you will see the thermostate. pop it out . it might be a little stuck, dont worry a little pressure it should just pop out. after you get it out check to see if open's by dropping it into a pot of boiling water for about 20 to 30 should see were the two disks on the bottom come together,should be seperated(if good) if there not seperated you need a new one. just follow these steps in reverse to replace dont forget to clean were the inlet sits on manifold before applying new gasket. and definatly DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN BOLTS just a few turns crisscrossing until nice and snug
