The best way is to turn engine over to #1 cylinder, turn by damper pulley. Remove #1 spark plug first and put a straw or similar device in plug hole on top of piston so you can tell when its at tdc. Just before #1 piston goes down thats tdc. To replace distributor put it back in with rotor button pointing to #1 wire in cap, tighten, replace the plug then start vehicle When vehicle starts adjust distributor by turning it either way. I took the distributor shaft out of a 1992 chevy Silverado 5.7L 8 c 350 without making it. how do I make sure it is in the right spot when I replace it?

You need to mually spin the crankshaft so that cylinder 1 is at top dead center. This can be done by removing the spark plug in it and have someone watch the hold with a light to see when it gets to the top of the cylinder. Then take the distributor and index the rotor to the position that is for cylinder 1 and reinstall the distributor.

Engine cranks fuel not a problem no spark disributor turning

If fuel is getting to the cylinders than the pickup coil inside the distributor is good and the most likely problem Is the ignition module on the side of the distributor has gone bad. Most of the time, especially with the four cylinders, the distributor needs to be turned in order to gain access to the two bolts that hold the module to the distributor. Make sure you mark the base of the distributor before turning it so that it can be put back in the same exact position. They make a special ford module tool just for these. It will have a torx bit on one end and a thin wall socket on the other. The tool will make this project much easier and well worth the investment. Your local parts store should have them on the shelf. If you have any questions let me know. Thank you for using fixya.com.

This 2002 nissan 2400 pickup has had the timing chin replace by my mechanic. he swears up and down he did it correctly. After letting another mechanic so-call mechanic took the carburetor screws in and...

Hi, your diagram is below. Also threw in the timing marks. Not sure how hard it is to get the top cover off the timing chain as I have not worked on this engine. If you could get a peek at those timing marks you could verify valve timing. Let me know if you have more questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

Took the distributor out and cleaned it then put it back in and now the truck wont crank but tries to do so. need some tips please

Did you take out the ENTIRE Distributor or just the cap?

If you took out the entire Distributor, and put it back in, there is a possibility that you put it in backwards. The bottom of the Distributor has a 'notch' in it. If you turn it 180 degrees the wrong way, and put it back in, your truck will not start, because it is in effect 180 degrees out of alignment with the timing.

If you only took out the cap, refer to your owners manual (Hanes is best) for the plug wire placement in reference to the firing order, and make sure all the plug wires are in the correct locations. Also, make sure your plug wires are seated all the way down onto the plugs, and the cap is secured tightly onto the base of the Distributor.

Make sure your Coil Wires are also seated properly to the coil and the Distributor.

Clean the battery connections. Remove the battery connections, clean them and reinstall.
