Question about 1992 Mazda Navajo

1 Answer

Navajo seems to be straining under load, and the engine sounds "out of whack" on an older car I would have thought the distributor cap was slightly off line... Could it be something like this? Feels like it is running on only 5 cylinders, but doesn't sound like it... The cat. converter does need replacing, is it possible that this is causing the loss of power?

Hi this sounds like the fuel filter, They start showing signs underload while driving, Also bad plug wires and plugs will show signs underload, and you have a coil pack on that one? I have change many coil packs due to one cyl being week , you can pull the plug wires off the coil pack one at a time while it is running check to see that they all have great spark make sure you dont have a week one. that should give you a starting place also you can check the temp of the inlet and outlet on the cat see if it is greater than 100 diff cats can cause this but it is what made the cat go bad which is usually a tune up issue that made it go bad.

Definitely because the timing is out. You will have to re-time the distributor. Bring the engine up to #1 TDC. Remove the dist cap and check the rotor location (it should be pointing forward slightly to the drivers side). If its pointing to the right rear, you'll need to rotate the engine one more full revolution. You can verify its TDC by checking the locator "V" on the crank balancer. Mark the location of the distributor to the base. Loosen off and lift out, use a long screwdriver down inside the hole to slightly turn the drive so it points just behind where #1 post is on the distributor cap when mounted. You may have to do this a few times to get right.

7.5l MFI/SFI timing (?) problems

Hi, you describe a chugging even on moderate hills, is your transmission shifting properly? It sounds like it's stuck in overdrive. Or a plugged injector or two that maybe push out fuel OK in warm up mode but not after. So if your transmission is downshifting when is should and you still have no power, I would have the injectors checked out. Good luck, chuckb

Maybe the timing is off, could ir be that you accidently moved the distributor while replacing the cap and rotor? If you have acces to a timing light give it a try. Good Luck.

Why does a spark plug fire at idle but not on acceleration ?

You may need to check the ignition wires and the distributor cap/rotor.
Older ignition wires will "break down" and the spark will actually short out on nearby metal/engine block etc.
Try this test. With the car running, parking brake set, and foot firmly holding the brakes, put the car in Drive and accelerate. If the engine misses under a load, it's most likely the ignition wires..

Transmisssion shifts slow when going from 1st to 2nd gear.

Try to get some lubrication on any cables &/or linkages to transmission, it sounds like they are sticking a bit.
