Ford Econoline Hard to Start

I think that if you have a carby system that I would be checking the auto choke operation. IF efi I would be running fault codes looking for sensor problems in the air intake area. Check the duel switch and ensure that there is not possibility of an air leak allowing fuel to drain back in the system as replacing the unit appears to be the start of your problem

1985 Ford Bronco 2 choke plate not closing

The choke butterfly (choke plate as you call it) can only be partially closed when the engine is cold. It is used to create a low pressure under in the throat of the carby which causes excess fuel into the engine when cranking and early running to help warm up and to prevent the carby icing up. After a few minutes the butterfly will be fully open and remain that way while the engine is at operating temp. As to the engine stopping down the road look for another fault -- Like incorrect fuel cap on tank , blocked fuel filter, dirty air filter If the engine starts easily and runs I doubt that the fault will be in the carby.

I have a 69 Ford F100, 1 barrel carburater, the choke needs to be wide open for it to run. When I switch gears, I need to close choke and open it back up when I shift-this is the only way it will run. If I...

You need to rebuild the carburetor. As it is a 1 barrel its relatively easy to rebuild if you can find a kit, but it is the original carb and difficult to find parts. You may also consider buying a Holley 2 barrel carb - it will bolt right on and give you more power, and they are much more common and easier to find rebuild kits and parts. It's possible you may need an adapter plate, depending on the configuration of your intake manifold, but that will be easy to find. You can either shop online or buy from your local auto parts store or high performance shop. That old 1 barrel has had its day and I'm sure it served you well, but I think I would upgrade to a newer carb myself. You may be able to clean it out using carb cleaner spray but it would be hard to clear out that clogged jet that is causing your trouble, and then you will likely tear the gasket when you take the top off that carb.

96' Corolla 1.6 Engine running erratic when cold.

Take the cover off when its cold before starting - give a press 1/2 way on the pedal and release. Check that the choke plate flap is now covering the carby inlet. If it is, then the auto choke is ok. If its manual choke - check that it works on and off.

If the choke does not close when cold take it to a car by repair shop for servicing.

If the choke is working ok then open the choke flap and move the accelerator linkage at the carby, in the same direction as it moves when you press the pedal - you should see/hear a jet of fuel being sprayed into the carby down beside the acccelerator flap.
If no fuel there you may have a prob with your 'pump' on the carby or maybe the fuel pump from the tank is faulty or blocked.

There may be a problem with dirt stuck in your jets -if you can't strip it your self, take the carby off and in for service.

As you need 3 things for the motor to work - fuel - spark from the coil and airflow. check these out one at a time
