I have a 2003 150 Yamaha four stroke. Starter engages but will not turn fly wheel. Can turn fly wheel by hand and have new battery

Either the starter isn't engaging the flywheel or the flywheel is chewed up/missing part or all the teeth/gears.

1992 subaru legacy starter wont engage fully and makes a loud grinding noise

Sounds like it is not toughing 100% and making full gear contact with the fly-wheel. Replace starter or the misalignment can burr the flywheel causing rounding and subsequent damage to the device.

Flywheel or something grings against the starter when clutch is engaged

There is no way the ring gear will hit the starter pinion unless the fly wheel bolts on the crank shaft or loose allowing the flywheel to run out of true. If you have had clutch/ rear seal work done lately the fly wheel will only fit in one position and if that was ignored at some time then the fly wheel will run out and touch the starter pinion.. I would also check the adjustment on the starter pinion as it has to be set by the lever pivot to a correct distance or it will touch the teeth of the ring gear

Put a new starter on every 6 months, sounds like apendex is not engaging, works good at first, then does not connect to fly wheel

you may need to put a thin spacer behind the starter so it sits closer to the fly wheel and ingages better and will not wear out.

What can cause the starter to not start until you turn the key three or four times, Its a 1995 olds cutlass 3.1 engine

Few points can be checked out.
1, fault in the ignition switch by itself not contacting to the solenoid.
2. the solenoid not contacting , failure of contact if there is even the clicking noise.
3.Starter motor brush/commutator is worn out and not contacting.
4.Finally the starter pinion is struck, not engaging with fly wheel .

INSTALLED NEW STARTER , SOUNDS LIKE ITS NOT FULLY ENGAGING FLYWHEEL

if the starter is making grinding sound it not! however it could be loos and needs to be bolted up tight or there may be a bad power joint to the starter,, check for this also check all the earth leads off the engine to the battery, if its still grinding then its likely to be a dud starter you fitted,, the solenoid is not fully engaging the starter bog in the fly wheel teeth and it stopping short and then it spins up this is whats making the grinding noise, it can also make a right mess of your fly wheel ring gear,, so dont leave it to long to get it sorted out,

Car starts but sometimes makes a whirling noise. I was told it was the starter

sounds like the starter is not disengaging the fly wheel quickly like it should when you turn the key the starter cog connects upto a fly wheel that has teeth all around it when the teeth of starter cog connect between teen on wheel it spins it to crank your car then goes back to starter if you hold your key on after starting the noise you hear is the starter cog(teeth ) still engaged in wheel if this is the sound it needs to be serviced not neccassarily replaced
