Question about 1999 Buick Park Avenue

Open Question

Trying to replace the idler pulley on 1999 Buick PA with supercharger. This is on the supercharger belt. The pulley i am trying to replace is directly behind the engine mount bracket. I have removed the engine bracket bolts, disconnected the engine bracket from the motor mount support, and removd the bolts holding the motor mount to the frame. i also loosened the right engine mount, and jacked up the passenger side of the car. I still cannot get the engine bracket off of the engine enough to get at the pulley bolt. I noticed the three engine bracket have a torx head. When I removed the nuts on the mounting bolts, two came off leaving the bolt in the engine housing. The lower right bolt came out intact. I came not move the engine bracket forward enough to clear the top right stud, so i cannot get enough clearance to get the pulley bolt. Are all three of the engine bracket bolts removable? If so, how do you get them out?

SOURCE: change idler pulley

It's a T-40 size, but I removed the bolt by first removing the bracket holding the pulley--I assume you're talking about the alternator idler pulley, the one right below the alternator. The bracket is held in place by three 14 mm bolts which I was able to reach from the top of the engine (after removing the black plastic air tube). I then put the bracket in a vise and "buzzed" off the 14 mm nut using an electric impact wrench ($30 +/- from Heartland of America). Be careful when putting the nut back on--the impact wrench will likely be too much torque!

Just replaced the supercharger belt I am trying to release the tension to get it around the supercharger pulley. How do I release the tension of the belt?

There are 2 sepentine belts on your vehicle. You must use a wrench to turn the belt tensioners. Usually a breaker-bar works well.

The tensioner for the outer belt is below the power steering pump and is easier to get to with the vehicle jacked up and the wheel and plastic splash-shield removed. The tensioner for the inner belt (the one for the supercharger) is located between the alternator and the supercharger. (see picture)

The 1996 Buick Riviera SC has two belts. An inner and an outer belt. The outer belt is for the supercharger and the inner belt is the drive accessory belt. Rotate the tensioner pulley (idler) and remove the outer belt first. The do the same to remove the inner belt. Check all make pulleys and make sure they are free of any debris or oil.

Route the belt according to the diagram above leaving the tensioner pulley for last and maintaining tension on the belt with your hand. Rotate the tensioner pulley enough to slip the belt on. Inspect your belt and make sure it on correctly before you start to put the outer belt on. Repeat these steps for the outer belt.

Hope this helps (remember to rate and comment this answer).

How do I change the main serpentine belt on a supercharged 99 park avenue ultra?

On your idler pulley there is a 15mil bolt... put a wrench on this bolt (long wrench) and turn it like you are turning it tighter. The idler pulley will move forward releasing tension on your belt. Make sure you pull the belt off the alternator pulley when the idler pulley is compressed. You may want to pay attention to how the belt is on there, maybe 2 people would be a good idea too if you aren't familiar with your car.

Replace idler arm pulley

An idler arm is a steering component found on vehicles without rack and pinion steering. Your referring to an idler pulley. To replace: remove the belt, remove the bolt from the center of the pulley, replace the pulley and reinstall the belt.

These cars have a lot of problems with all the idler pulleys and the tensioner. You will most likely have to replace them. You may also want to check the harmonic balancer and make sure it is running true.Spin the supercharger by hand with the belt off,it should spin freely with no end play in the shaft to speak of.I hope this helps...Dan
