Question about 1979 Pontiac Firebird

Can't find the correct wire to the a/c compressor in my engine compatment. also can't find any wiring diagrams for that year. I own a 1973 Pontiac fierbird and have the factory a/c but I believe the wires to the old compressor have been cut or removed and I just don't know how to power the new I have installed

I checked some old diagrams for that and though they show just about everything else, the a/c part is vague...If I remember correctly, I believe the compressor gets powered through the heater control switch, to the heater relay, then to a thermal limiter switch (a small black item with two male spade connectors protruding from it.) then that side goes to the clutch terminal. The other clutch terminal is ground. Since a/c was not a "fixed" option back then, likely there is a separate diagram for that option. Hope you find a diagram, but I believe I have it right. or, darn close to it! The only ting I can't remember is where the heater relay draws power from (likely a fusable link connected to the starter battery terminal)

Level Control Compressor Relay Malfunction .
You start by doing the diagnostic tests for that code .
Circuit Description
The automatic level control adjusts the vehicle suspension ride height. The RIM determines the height of the vehicle based on the voltage from the automatic level control sensor. The RIM grounds the compressor relay and the exhaust control solenoid to raise and lower the vehicle in order to keep the vehicle level.

Diagnostic Aids
• Inspect all wiring harnesses carefully for chaffs and proper routing. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.
• This circuit is monitored before every functional operation of the compressor relay output. If a compressor relay fault is detected, the RIM retries the output every 15 seconds to try to recover from the fault.

Your probably not going to be able to do the factory diagnostics unless you have a factory scan tool to turn on an off the relay . You can test with a volt meter at the relay for B+ voltage and control from the RIM - Rear Integration Body Control Module. Do you know what a relay is and how it works ?

Install a scan tool.
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
With a scan tool, command the level control compressor relay ON and OFF.
Does the level control compressor relay turn ON and OFF with each command?

YES Go to Diagnostic Aids
NO Go to Step 3

Turn OFF the ignition.
Disconnect the level control compressor relay .
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Probe the coil side feed circuit of the level control compressor relay with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.
Does the test lamp illuminate?

YES Go to Step 4
NO Go to Step 10

Connect a test lamp between the control circuit of the level control relay and the coil side feed circuit of the level control compressor relay.
With a scan tool, command the level control compressor relay ON and OFF .
Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with each command?

Potential Causes:
- Connector
- Defective Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) Wiring
- Defective Thermostat

Tests/procedures
1. Measure engine temperature and ensure it is getting up to proper operating temperature.
2. Connect a Volkswagen-compatible scan tool and monitor engine temperature on the scan tool. Compare to the actual engine temperature to determine if the coolant sensor is working correctly.

Altima engine shaking


AC compressor put load on engine causing engine shake vibrate.but check make sure AC compressor mounting bolts tight and drive belt correct tension.now if AC compressor very old most time bad compressor cause more load on engine causing shaking real bad.

Does the system have a leak? If it does, then the computer might have set a low freon code that usually does not turn on the check engine light by itself. If this occurs, the code will have to be erased before the compressor will run. The computer does this in order to protect the compressor so that it cannot run without enough freon in the system. Once you correct the amount of freon in the system (if it needs it), reset the system and see if the compressor will run. Some parts stores have the ability to erase codes and will usually do it for free. I hope this solves your problem. It's definitely not good to have AC problems this time of year. If you didn't take the air compressor off the old engine then you probably have a bad compressor on the new motor. If you did then you may not have installed it or wired it correctly.

With the car in idle, turn the AC on and off and watch the rpms, they should fluctuate slightly when you turn it on and off, if they don't change at all then the compressor probably isn't wired to the controls.

The reason for the fluctuating RPM is that when the compressor kicks on it creates a load on the engine, which causes the rpms to temporarily dip down, the engine will then feed more gas to recover the original RPM.

Air conditioner has freon but it only blows hot air


Sounds like the A/C Compressor Clutch isn't engaging. With the A/C turned on and the engine running, open the hood and see if the center of the A/C Compressor pulley is rotating. If it isn't, then that's why there isn't any cold air. Check all the fuses and relays then check to make sure that the A/C Compressor signal wire is getting 12V when the A/C is switched on. If the compressor clutch isn't engaging, the fuses and relays are good and the signal wire to the compressor is getting 12V then the A/C Compressor itself may need to be replaced. This is, of course, assuming your are certain that there is refrigerant in the system and it is at the correct pressure!

Here's the electrical path:

From fuse 17, 10 amp, currrent travels through white/lt blue stripe wire to the a/c switch on the a/c/heater controls.

Coming out of control panel, a pink wire goes to the clutch cycling pressure switch located on the the a/c receiver/drier.

Coming out of the pressure switch, a pink/lt blue stripe wire goes to the engine computer,a nd at the same time same color wire goes to the IRCM, integated relay control module. Mounted on driver side strut module.

I see no red/y wire in the circuit. I think you should get the pink wires going into and out of the pressure switch.

Try jumpering the 2 terminals in the connector for the pressure switch to see if the compressor comes on.

I see a red/y wire coming off fuse 18, 10 amp. It goes to the warning chime module, instrument cluster, and warning chime module and passive restraint module. It also, under the hood, goes to the speed control amplifier. That's probably where he jumped from.

The only right compressor for the car is the correct part number, the reason is the mounting of the compressor to the engine, although all Sanden units are the same inside they vary for each car for the reason I have stated, mounting Bose's.
