BMW 650 Tail Light Problem

If you find that your BMW 650 CS/GS/Dakar tail light doesn’t work at all or flickers when riding, chances are the metal power terminals inside the bulb socket are no longer making a good connection with the metal bumps on the tail light bulb. This is a very common problem with the BMW 650 of all makes, models, and years. Fortunately, there is a very easy fix.
Due to excessive vibration, temperature changes, and replacing light bulbs, the two metal power terminal tabs inside the tail light socket deform and get pushed too far back inside the tail light chassis. This prevents the tail light bulb from making good contact with the power terminals and the smallest vibrations can cause the electric connection to break temporarily or indefinitely.

To fix the problem, all you need to do is pry the two metal power tabs forward just a little so that they make a better connection with the metal bumps on the tail light bulb. If you look at the back of the bike, the red tail light casing on the 650 CS/GS/Dakar is held in place with two screws. If you remove these screws the red tail light casing comes off and you have access to the light bulb inside. At this point, turn the ignition on, but you don’t need to start the bike. Remove the light bulb by pushing in and twisting clockwise about 1/8 turn. If the bulb flickered while removing it, then the bent power terminals are most likely the cause.
Looking at the tail light bulb you should see two metal bumps. These bumps need to make a good connection with the two metal power terminals inside the tail light casing. Turn the ignition off and find a small tool that you can use to pry the power terminals forward just a bit. Make sure the bike is off and you don’t want the power terminals tabs inside the tail light casing to touch.
After you have made the adjustment, turn the ignition back to “on” and re-insert the taillight bulb. If the bulb is lit, then you are done. If it still flickers a bit and doesn’t stay lit, then you will need to continue prying the tabs forward until a good connection is made.

Do I replace a tail light from the inside of the truck or does the tail light pop out...just trying to make it to the bulb to replace. thanks 1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

i believe that there is fasteners inside the trunk that hold the tail light assembly to the car.i think about 6 that look like wing nuts and are black plastic that need to be removed to pull out the tail light assembly to replace the bulbs in the back of the lens assembly itself.

I cant seem to find out how to remove the tail light to replace the bulb. what am i missing?

Typically, the entire tail light assembly has to be released from the inside. So you have to remove trim, inside, for access, usually 3 or 4 thumbscrews get released and the whole thing comes out. This set up is much more watertight than the older method of lense removal.

No tail lights or inside lights or radio????

Often times the tail lights and dash lights are powered by the same fuse. The reason for this was so you would know that your tail lights weren't working if you didn't have any dash lights. I would look for a fuse that says "Tail" or "Courtesy". Your owners manual should have an illustration of the fuse panel and what circuits they power. Good luck, hope this helps!

How do you get the tail light cover off to replace the bulb

Hello: Open the tailgate, on the inside of the tail light lens (toward the other tail light) you will find two screws, remove the screws, wiggle the tail light lens assembly and it should come off.

How do you get the tail light cover off

The tail light is molded in one piece. If your looking to replace the bulbs, there should be an access panel inside the pickup box behind the tail light. The whole tail light assembly can be removed from there as well.

How do I change the tail light to my 2005 Ford Taurus. Someone backed into me and it broke. I bought the tail light online and can't afford to get it put on. How can I change it?

From inside the trunk. Open trunk and you'll find large black plastic wing nuts on the inner trunk wall opposite of your tail lights. Simply unscrew them and the tail light bulbs will come out of the lenses from the inside area of the trunk.

Tail light assembly

If you look inside the trunk, you will need to undo the panel inside trunk to gain access to the bolts that mount the tail light assy's.

Replace tail lights

Usually all you have to do is pull back the inside trunk liner behind the tail lights from inside the trunk, or there may be a plastic door that you open to access the tail lights. The wires going to the tail lights connect to a plug that you turn counter clockwise and pull out from the back of the tail light assembly. Once you have removed the connector replace the bulb. Some light bulbs just pull straight out of the connector, others you may have to push in and turn counter clockwise to remove.
