Shuddering going uphill 2001 mitsubishi montero sport

Thank you very much for your response. It did turn on the engine light, had the spark plugs and wires replaced, then the engine coil. The light is off but it is still doing the same problem, just not as severe. I have been reading about a transmission torque problem with these cars 2000 and over. It talks about shuddering going up hill or hiway speeds of 50 mph which my car is still currently doing. They are suggesting flushing the transmission and using Mits SPIII ATF only. I will give it a try and post my results.

Most likely you have a misfire, I'd be surprised if it didnt turn on the check engine light. It may be a coil or sparkplg problem.
Do this this. With your foot on the brake hard and the ebrake on put the car in gear and rev the car up a bit. What your doing is putting a load on the engine to see if it shutters. If it does it points to a coil issue usually or it just may be time plugs and wires

even tho the light is off their still is a code stored in memory. IIf a good scanner is used to read it it can help point to the cylinder thats being affected. TThere are only two choices now, either you have a coil issue or injector issue. Be aware if this is a misfire get it fixed ASAP because you are now stressing the catalytic converter. It can wear out fast with a misfire then you will get a p0420 code indicating the cat may need to be replaced

I have a 2001 Montero Sport with 325,000 miles on it. I had recently changed the plugs and wire set. A few months later my vehicle would shutter going uphill at 55 MPH. The engine light would come on. I checked the error code and it indicated the number 6 cylinder had misfired. I suspected the injectors but a bad injector would create the same problem at ,any speed. Once again I pulled the exhaust manifold apart and found my spark plugs where in a pool of oil. I changed the valve cover gasket and got a top grade set of plugs and wires. Now my Montero Sport rips uphill without any problems. Be careful when buying replacement parts as there is is a dramatic difference in quality. A cheap wire set and oil probly caused the spark plug to ground out before the electricity could reach the botom of the plug.

There is one other possibility. I had the same problem and thought I had it fixed by changing the coil, spark plug wire and the plug itself. I also changed the valve cover gasket. The problem manifested itself again. It also ha[p[ened that my break lights had gone out. My third problem was my cruise control would not disengage when I applied the break. I knew that replacing the break light switch located on top of the break peddle arm would cure the problem. I bought a new one for $30,00. When I was up at the counter the guy mentioned that this unit controls the cruise control shutoff and also coordinates the transmission when shifting. I had noticed the transmission was a little off but still worked. After I replced break light on/off switch iy cured all three problems. Now when I travle uphill I no longer have any problem, the cruise shuts off when I apply the break, and my break lights come on.

2001 montero sport xls sport horn on my alarm how do i stop it i pulled the fuse but it is still goint

You need to determine if it's the horn or the alarm. My Montero (not Sport) had 3 horns. All 3 of which go off w/ the Alarm, but only one is connected to the horn on the steering wheel. I could not make mine go off w/o pulling the relay under the hood.

My spring was bad in the steering wheel. I was able to bypass the wire using instructions that I actually found on a Mitsubishi Forum. Link below:

Spark Plugs

generally they play up under load like going uphill in top gear. Put some load on then try pulling away up hill in top gear, if smooth uptake then they are ok. Or remove and hv tested at auto electrican. cheers

2000 Montero Sport shutters/vibrates in 2 and 3 gears

Could be a wheel bearing and/or a rear differential pinion bearing, which usually get worse when under load(going up hill). I would definitely start there.

Shuddering uphill

How full was the gas tank? Maybe the tank was low and gas sloshed away from fuel pump pick up tube. Try shifting out of overdrive when going up hills, you might be lugging the engine at too slow of speed ( running at too low of RPM's compared to where engine makes it's peak torque, mixed with it being a heavy SUV can cause chugging or shuddering).

My 2000 montero sport has little or no power when driving up hill

First thing I'd do is replace the fuel filter. If the car runs fine on level ground or downhill but struggles uphill, it's usually because a clogged filter isn't allowing enough fuel through to satisfy the engine's demand for enough to keep you at speed going uphill. Try that out - it's an inexpensive part and is usually the cause of your symptoms.
