Needs adjusting properly ,cannot remember how i done one about a year ago .Sorry i work on so many different models and makes i just work from looking at something then working it out .

After fitting the cables! You need to adjust the GATE cable as each gearbox has slightly different wear... One cable selects the gears.. The other is responsible for the smooth gear selection! Sounds like your out of line mate! Theres an adjustable thread on the GATE cable! Keep adjusting til it selects smoothly! JOB DONE SAAAAAAN!! :-)
if it is knocking in reverse gear , that is an indication that a tooth of the reverse gear or reverse gear idler is badly chipped or broken
it will require a box strip down and gear and bearing replacement
best stick with the same gear box as there may be too many difficulties to fit a different box
Automatic or manual? I take it you can select reverse when engine is not running? Wild guess, linkage from shifter to transmission is out of adjustment, or the bushings on the linkage is bad. They wear out. Recommend a dealer or very knowledgeable shop.
IF all other gears work as designed then the problem will not be the clutch but in the gear box. The only thing that you would have removed in the gear box is the gear lever or the gear level turret on top of the box. recheck this area to ensure that you have got the lever in the selector rails correctly and that the reverse rail is not out of line with the cross section of the others.. Use a big screw driver to pull it out of gear to align across the slot.

The reverse switch is on the gearbox on the left side next to the drive shaft. Unplug the plug and bridge the two pins with a pice of wire, turn the ignition on and select reverse. If it works like this then the switch is faulty. make sure the bulb is not faulty. Good luck...........
