If by starter you mean the starter motor then they are always located between the tranny and the engine. You should be able to see it if you look where the two meet.

Should be a solenoid attached to the starter motor, and a relay in one of the fuse blocks.

When you replaced the motor did you replace the resistor and its wiring harness as well? I had to replace all 3 on mine to get them to work this is typical on the Colorado and trailblazers

check fuses, cables, starter solenoid, starter motor.

Sounds like a possible dead spot in the starter.

Why don't you just pull the one head and have it surfaced and check the valves, fix the problem, put on a new gasket and see what happens. It is a lot easier than pulling the motor.
