I had this problem. Purchased a brake switch that fits against the back of the brake pedal arm. It has a small plunger that fits against the top of the pedal arm and plugs into a power source. Hard to get to, but only cost me $18. The switch releases the shifter. No problems since.

SOURCE: After backing out of drive,

After I asked shop to check my 2002 LEXUS ES300, trunk release switch is not working. The shop owner said, he did not touch there, only check passenger side air bag. I checked in glove box, but switch is push in (turn on). Now, it only works with the key and remote. How can I fix this?

My car won't shift out of park. What do I do? I don't know what the problem is. Can you help me?

  • Do your brake lights work?
    • The brake switch is often tied into the shift interlock mechanism.
    • Have someone stand behind your car and check your brake light operation.
    • If the brake lights don't turn on when you push on the brake, check the brake switch to make sure it's plugged in and operating correctly. Its down by the brake pedal lever. Replace if defective or broken.
  • Does your car have a manual shift interlock release?
  • center console area.
    • Check around your shifter for a button, key slot, or plug.
    • If you find a plug, removing it may reveal a slot to insert a key.
    • Pushing the shift interlock button or inserting a key into the slot should allow you to shift out of park, but make sure to apply the brakes first.
    • If your shifter has a button on the knob you always have to push to shift out of park, a problem with this button will also prevent you from shifting into gear.

I cannot shift the selector level out of parking position to other position even though the brake pedal is de-pressed.

Don't know make and model but try putting your key in the slot if you have a floor shifter and see if that releases it cable probably broke you will have to leave car in nutral and set parking brake or get a spare key to leave in the slot

that is park lock failure, build into the shifter section,it has an
electric solenoid lock. and a bypass button.
in the glove box, see oper. guide, it tells you where the erg. release
button location, and varies by sub body type and options.
its hidden cover, or a slot, on most cars. the slot type is to insert

    Shift lock parking break

ck if your brake lights are working, if not, ck the fuse. if fuse is good and brake lights work, could be problem with solenoid not unlocking the lever, there should be a bypass so you can get it into gear (small slot near shifer, put your key in there to release shifter)

Car will start but gear shift is locked

follow instructions in manual for SHIFTLOCK RELEASE

    Turn off car.
    Engage Parking Break
Take ignition key and put into shift lock release slot (near gear shift)
Push down on key and at same time MOVE gear shift to neutral.
Remove key, start car as normal and disengage parking break...

good to go.... mechanic can replace/repair if this is an ongoing issue: $85 I read somewhere...but heard it's not hard to do yourself for $35 someone else wrote.
