Remove and clean battery cables , replace bolts. Check for power going to the alt. it will not charge unless is has power in the connector wire. When alt is tested get them to tell you how many amps it is putting out, not volts. 12 volts will not charge a battery unless you have the correct amount of amps. I had a napa alt and had this trouble twice. The guy said it was good it had over 12 volts output, but it would not charge battery. I fixed mine with a better quality alt. from another store.

How do you know it's only putting out about 1/2 ? an 1/2 what ? Amps or volts ? Did you hook up a volt meter to the battery posts ? red to red an black lead to negative post of the battery ? Does it show 13.1 to 14. 1 volts with the engine running , if so it's charging . The only thing that would cause the alternator not to put out full charge amps would be a bad diode inside the alternator or a power or ground issue. Car did start


very simple my friend! start the jeep. put a multi meter on the battery on dc volts. if it is below 14 volts, the alternator is not charging the battery. you can also preform a draw test by disconnecting the positive terminal from the battery. set your meter to amps.(you may also have to move the jumper in the meter) connect you meter to both the battery, and the terminal. you shouldnt see anything about 10 milliamps. make sure all lights are off, and all doors are closed. if you have a draw, start by pulling 1 fuse, and seeing if the amps drop. if it doesnt, put the fuse back and go to another fuse. also, if you have anything aftermarket (radio, remote starter, etc.) this is most likely the issue

Car battery is loseing its charge when left for 48 hours. Alternator chargeing ok at 13.6 amps. No battrey drain indicated when checked with a DMM . Does this indicate alternator diode problem ?


You shouldn't check the amps - they vary according to the status of the battery, you should check the voltage and 13.6 V is way too low - the battery is practically never charged and this is why it fails just by sitting.
Check the alternator and replace it if in doubt.

Battery won't charge when car is on. Battery is fine. Believe it's a problem with the wiring


If the alternator has been bench tested and passed then you need to check the big wire for 12volts at the alternator. If you have 12 volts then you need to trace the other wire to the PCM. The charging system is computer controlled and its possible the computer is the issue. To diagnose this correctly go to mitchell1diy online and pay the ten bucks for all the proceduers and wiring diagrams. If the charging system light is off then try this. Charge up the battery. Then turn the lights on for a couple minutes to drain the surface charge. Then using a 12v meter hooked to the battery check the draining voltage while cranking. A good battery will maintain a 12 or better voltage even if the truck does not start. If it goes down fast then the battery is bad. Alot of times when a battery is tested using a professional tester they pass. You may need to remove the fuel pump relay so the truck does not start for this test since your testing the cranking amps. Also with the key out of the ignition and doors locked and the negative unhooked at the battery you can check for parasitic drain. Using a amp meter hooked up inline battery to cable you should have less than 1/10th volt. If any more then you have a component not shutting off. Pull fusses 1 at a time till you find the system thats the issue. Watch the meter as you pull fuses

start car and turn on headlights to high beam,turn on heater fan to high,and put four ways on too,now check the voltage at the battery post with a multi meter ,you should be at least 12.5 volts no lower,if it is lower replace alternator,

1997 eclipse has to be charged every day in order to drive


There seems to be a no charge state in this case. I recommend checking the charging system. use the procedure below to isolate this issue.

Wear protective eye wear and clothing and remove all jewelry when checking your battery and charging system. Jewelry is a good conductor of electricity and is not recommended. Most batteries wear out every 3 to 5 years and need to be replaced. Always replace your battery with an equal replacement battery to assure proper operation. Automotive batteries have a +positive terminal (red), - negative terminal (black). Electricity is stored in the battery and then supplied to the vehicle when the engine is not running. While the engine is running the vehicles alternator charges the battery for future use. (Note: never disconnect the battery while the engine is running. If the battery cable is disconnected from the battery a spark can be generated which can cause the battery to explode or a major electrical malfunction to occur.)

To check a battery surface voltage, remove the positive terminal protective cover. Connect the +positive side meter lead (red) to the positive side battery terminal. Connect the - negative (black) side meter lead to the negative battery terminal. With the vehicle not running and the car sitting over night the battery voltage should be between 12.5 and 12.8 volts.(You will need to use a voltmeter for this testing procedure)

The alternator is rotated by a drive belt driven by the vehicles engine while it is running. Electrical voltage and amperage are generated to recharge the battery and supply voltage to the electrical system of the car. The alternator is held in place with mounting bolts. There is a main electrical wire on the rear of the alternator that supplies voltage to a main voltage junction box. If your alternator is not charging properly, your battery will slowly drain down from operating all the electrical systems in your car and stop the car from running.(most non charge states will be the cause of a loose belt or a low tension rate, due to a mis-adjusted alternator. make sure you have enough tension in the belt for full rotation of the alt pulley)

Next, you will need to check the alternators output with the Amp meter.

Testing the amperage output of the alternator is good for measuring the amount (not the level) of voltage the alternator can produce. This test can be tricky because if the alternator is weak it can still show it as producing amperage. Which is good, but if the voltage is low, it will still allow the battery to go dead. To check the amperage output of an alternator an amp meter is needed. Once the meter is connected start the engine. Next turn on all electrical accessories and raise the engine idle to about 1200 RPM. The alternator should output the max amperage it was designed to produce. Example: a 90 amp alternator should output about 88 amps. Note: An alternator cannot sustain maximum output for long periods of time. If the alternator is forced to operate at maximum output it will overheat and fail. An alternator is designed to operate at max amperage output only for a reasonable amount of time.

((Connect the voltage meter lead the same way you would in a battery static voltage check, Start engine (do not drive) at engine idle the voltage should be between 13.6 to 14.3 volts. If not the alternator may need replacing.)))

2000 ford zx2, battery light keeps coming on/off, had alt checked (good), battery checked (good), could this possibily be a wiring issue (short/bad connection)?


There seems to be a no charge state in this case. i recommend checking the charging system. use the procedure below to isolate this issue.

1997 Cadillac Catera: When the AC is on and the cooling fan comes on the charging guage drops to almost the red. voltage at battery drops from 14.6 to 13.2 and shows undercharge on a battery testing meter....


A charge rate of 13.2 is fine...Likely your battery is getting older and is not charging as well as it used to. You should periodically re-charge the battery using an external charger, as the alternators actual function is to maintain the batteries state of charge, not to re-charge it. Opening the doors, playing the radio with the engine off etc, can and will drain your battery. The alternator will only put a surface charge there and will not actually replace this lost power. I'd begin to worry if charge rate dropped below 12.9.but even then you likely would not have any real problems.

Battery problem


Check the battery for a draw, if you know how to use a Ampere meter, put it inline and make sure all doors are closed, and if the car has a lamp under the hood disconnect it. With the Ammeter in line, you should see a reading on the meter.
If there is a reading, disconnect the amp power connector and the reading should drop. If it does, you may have to install a power relay to control the amplifiers to ensure they do not drain them in future.

The second possibility is that the power consumption of your amps is preventing the battery from charging completely. Especially if the battery has bad cells. It would be helpful to know what amprerage your alternator is putting out and what the amperage draw of your amps are while in use.
Of course if demand is higher than supply then the battery will have difficulty keeping up.

One quick check is to check battery voltage with a meter, start the car, check the voltage is it around 13 volts and increasing, turn on the amps, again check the voltage, is it still increasing or decreasing. Rev the car up a few rpm's If it is decreasing then you are taxing the charging system.
Replace the battery and try these tests again.
