Question about Mercury Sable

1 Answer

I have a 2001 mercury sable. frequently, it will not start until several tries. when the turn on the key, it makes a kind whining noise, and usually takes 4-5 tries before it finally turns over. once it starts and you try to drive the car, it will barely move, and it blows hot air out of the air conditioner. i have to turn it off, then restart it, and it runs fine. i have had 6 mechanics look at this car for this problem in the past year and none of them knows what is causing this. i've had the starter replaced, a tuneup, the brakes done, a plenum gasket changed and a vaccuum hose replaced. diagnostics finds nothing. any suggestions as to what it could be. i am at wits end and have spent $900 trying to find out what is causing this. i'm afraid to go out anywhere in it for getting stranded. please email me:

i can't remember if the ac was off or not when i had the problem. but i do know when it finally started it blew hot air out of the ac until i turned it off and restarted it. if the problem all along was that i am trying to start it with the ac on, and that caused it, i'll kick myself. i know for fact at least some of the time it was doing it, the ac was on when i tried to start it. if that's what causing, i can live with that. thanks for your help. the car has been in the shop for a week and they have no idea what is causing it. i'll suggest this to them. all i know is that i'm afraid to go anywhere in it because i'm afraid i'll get stranded. i just paid the car off and it only has 50,000 miles on it so i really don't want to trade it in for another one. thanks again!

Have you had the fuel pump pressure checked? Does the a/c get cold? Try starting it with the A/C off and see if it makes a difference. It sounds like the cold start loop is not working. Let us know.

If they fix it let us know so we can help someone else. Please mention the fuel pressure. The whining sound is usually the fuel pump pressuring up the system. But electrical parts can do it on bad connections. The "4 or 5 times till it turns over" if you had to turn the key that many times without a reaction could mean a bad keyswitch, starter relay, or starter but would not explain the movement problem once it was started. The A/C problem can mean that circuit is not getting power on the first start, but after the juice flows it clears up. Don't give up, since you seem to have had the car for some time and have low miles. Good Luck

I have a whining noise coming from my 1999 Mercury Sable. Starts at about 20 MPH and increases getting the loudest around 40-60 mph then holds steady, have shifted to nuetral and whining stays. I believe...

Could be anything connected with the front wheels.
So that includes hub-wheel bearings, axle joints, the differential gears, and the transmission.

Turn the key between the "off" and "run" position without engaging the starter. Can you hear the fuel pump turning on and off every time? The car SHOULD build proper fuel pressure, then shut the pump off until its been cranked or has sat for a while. If the pump never shuts off or is pumping every time its switched on and off, I'd say you've got a pressure issue or leak in the system. Testing fuel pressure isn't too difficult either. The tools can be "borrowed" from autozone or similar store if you don't own them already. Just buy them, do the job and return them clean and complete. I've never had a problem, even with "non-returnable once used" tools! : ) These stores can usually supply you with the proper specs if you need them. You may also want toi try testing the signal to the injectors themselves. Ahgain, tools avail at autozone and the likes. Good luck!

My 2003 mercury sable will not start. it is not the battery. it makes a weird click click noise when key is turned in ignition. what could this be?

If you are sure it is not the battery then it has to be the starter. If it makes just one click when you turn the key then the noise you are hearing is the starter solenoid. This means the starter gear is engaging with the flywheel but the motor is no longer working and is not turning the engine over. I hope this helps!

2000 sable wont go into gear

No quick fix. If you are lucky, it is just the flexplate snapped loose from the torque converter. There is usually a door that you take off to access the 4 bolts that hold the flex plate to the converter. Remove that door to see if the bolts have sheared off.

Mercury sable 2004

Depends on the sound that it makes when you turn the key over.

Clicking noise...usually the starter

If it sounds like its going to start, but doesnt, most likely the battery.

If you have replaced the battery recently, then its the alternator.

Sometimes there can be oil build up over the spark plugs so it doesnt get the spark to start.

Hope you get it fixed!!
