Question about Lexus ES 300

2 Answers

Greetings-- Hope you can be of assistance. Have a 1993 Lexus ES300 with 145,000 miles. Two issues. First, cannot retain charge. Wouldn't start after sitting 4-5 days. Completely dead! Alternator and belts may be the problem. Think the battery is OK. Know the idle too low. But wonder if there are other electrical areas to check? (Fuses??) Second issue: When the car was drivable, it would lunge forward every so often when pressing axcelerator. Could this be the fuel pump? Or, would the jets to the plugs need to be cleaned out? (Do have new spark plugs and new timing belt.) Very much appreciate your help. Samuel Harper

    Hi Mr. Ginko--

    Thanks for the fast info.

I've been using a neighborhood service center. The Lexus dealer in Indianapolis is miles north, and darn expensive! I can't afford their service.

Question is how can my mechanic get a Lexus code reader. Don't believe he has one.

    Thanks again.

Mr. Harper,
I assume that Ginko helped you with your other questions and your new question is where you can get a code reader for your 1993 Lexus. That being said, you (or your mechanic) can purchase one here:
http://www.autorepairmanuals.biz/site/573683/product/EQUUS3173
The cost is only $25 so it's not bad. Let me know if you have any further questions and thanks for using FixYa!

If car drain up when you leave it parked, then it is not the alternator.

The alternator only affects the battery recharge, if battery stays charged for a while then alternator is OK, the problem is a parasitic drain somewhere in wiring, or a faulty battery that does not hold charge.

Think that the battery is OK is not enough. The battery must be tested replacing with a different one to check if it holds charge, a battery with shorted cells can cause the drain.

To test if it is a parasitic drain, use a new tested battery and leave the car parked with battery unplugged.
If it does not drain up, then you have a parasitic drain.

To measure drainage remove ignition key, connect the amp meter between the battery positive wire connector and positive terminal.A couple of milliamps drainage is normal, and is caused by instruments, car stereo memory, ECU etc.
Start removing more fuses , and open the wiring at different points , trying to locate the problem.
Remove the fuses and see if you have drain by connecting a meter to read amps on battery, if you have drain with no fuse, then the problem is insulated to wiring harness before the fuse, with something shorted between the battery and the fuseblock.

Regarding the other problem, the best thing to do is testing the car computer with a code reader, many faults can cause the same problem, and the ECM (computer) scan can tell you if the problem is related to vacuum system, misfire, faulty TPS etc.

Regards.

Why do my 1993 lexus ls 400 shut off after driving 4 to 6 miles and restart after sitting for a few minutes but shut off again?

Is your check engine light coming on? Sounds as if something is getting hot and then cooling down my research points to a known fault of your year and type of vehicle The electronic control module has capacitors in it that are sub grade and they melt down after awhile and have been known to cause this as well as a bunch of other driveability issues. Replace your ECM and let me know

How many mile can u tipically get out of a 93 lexus 300 before itsnot worth resale value? i was in the market to buy a lexus but it has 210,000 miles on it. it runs excellent! the purchase price is $2500...

AT 100,000 MOST PEOPLE ARE LEARY TO BUY EVEN A LEXUS, AT 200,000+ THE CAR ISN'T WORTH MUCH, I WOULD OFFER $2000.00 IF THE CAR IS REALLY NICE, BUT STRONGLY SUGGEST U ASK FOR SERVICING RECORDS LIKE OIL CHANGES AND HAVE THE CAR INSPECTED BY A LEXUS DEALER.

Check engine light on in 93 Lexus

The only way to check why the check engine light is on is to have autozone or a mechanic put a scanner on the car and read the engine codes. This will tell you exactly what is wrong. Many part stores will test it for free. Mechanics will charge about $40 But you will definately know exactly what the problem is.

If gauge is fine and car smells hot. It is probably due to plugged exhaust unless you have a wire laying on the exhaust manifold and it's melting.
