You should use a 32mm socket and a long extension to control the force while you twist it off. sometimes they come hard, but they always come. be sure to change the o-ring this time.

How to change oil filter?

Your oil filter sits inside a housing with a cap, theres a tool thats used to remove the cap its like a big socket, you may also use a socket, if you open your hood and look at the motor, look down the engine toward trany you will see oil filter housing, let me see if a picture is available to help. here a diagram of the engine its of the engine componets i circled the filter housig.johnjohn2_22.gif

2004 Saturn Ion oil change

Oil drain plug is its on the back passenger side of the engine out of sight unless you under the car itself .

It's a cartridge filter that goes into a canister. You'll need a 32mm oil filter canister socket to remove the cover to access the filter. You can find it at PepBoys for less than $10 by the other oil change supplies.

Finding the oil filter canastire

Under the top cover...there is a black cap. Use either a wrench or a set of channel locks to open that up. The canister filter goes in there.

Want to change our own oil in 2004 Saturn Ion and cannot find how to do it and what tools we will need?

Make sure your car is off and cool (cannot have been running for the last hour as the oil will burn)

Owner's manual will say exactly what oil and oil filter to use. Most stores have cross reference sheets as well

You'll need a socket wrench with an adapter for the oil filter and an adapter for the drain plug
You could get an oil filter strap as well instead of the adapter.

Remove the filler cap on the top of the engine....

Put a drain tray under the drain pan and remove the drain plug (it will leak oil out as you're loosening it). Do not lose the drain plug as you'll be using it still. Check plug to see if there's any extra metal on it (ie. engine parts are grinding) Let drain and then repeat for oil filter.

Once completely drained, put the plug back in and then poor a bit of oil into the oil filter and then reinstall the filter. Pour the required amount of oil in through the top of the engine and close the cap....

Can't locate the oil filter

The ION doesn't use a conventional screw-on "cannister" filter - instead it uses a paper filter which is more expensive (surprise), and which is housed near the engine block UNDER that plastic hood which covers your engine. In addition, you need a 1 1/4 inch wrench to remove the oil filter cover... sucks, doesn't it?
