Question about 2002 Ford F250 Super Duty SuperCab

2 Answers

After driving a bit, when I stop at lights the tranny light comes on and its like the tranny disengages because there is no acceleration right away. If I switch the gears & go back to drive it is ok or if there is enough time at the lights it resets itself.

  • patrizo_inc Jul 18, 2009

i sent you that info an hour ago. i started out this morning, drove 1 km, stopped @ lights, lost drive, switched gears, came back. Drove 1 - 2 kms, stopped, happened again, drove 10 kms, nonstop, got to set of lights, happened again. Let it sit, drove 10 kms, everthing was ok. Smelled the fluid & doesn't smell burnt. Had it looked @ because light was coming on @ high speeds, was told everthing is fine.

The solution was very helpful but the communication between emails was dissapointing especially as a first time user. I hope it improves the next time I use your service.

Hi,

I cannot check the previous replies to you but have you checked the solenoid of your tranny? Check if it has voltage running to it or probably needs cleaning. If can also check on the valves of the gear. The solenoid and the valves are located near each other. You can have it checked if it is clogged. Normally these are the things to look at and normally at fault when the tranny does not engage properly. Other than that you can look into the fuid if draining and replacing with new oil helps.

Could be a number of things. First is there the correct amount of fluid, smell trans fluid, if it smells burnt then bands are starting to slip. If not valve body of filter could be getting plugged, which could be caused by slipping bands, when bands break down they put grit in fluid. Also could be torque converter going bad. You don't stat how many miles on it? Have you ever had trans fluid and filter changed? Let me know.

What about other queastions I asked, this would help if I had more info. Thanks

Sorry about lag time having computer problems. You say you had it checked, what did you have checked? To check trans valve body and filter you need to take off trans pan. Something in trans is sticking or plugged not allowing fluid to flow freely.

1996 Toyota Hilux Surf hubs and diff erratically engaging and disengaging

Based on what you wrote about sitting for a week, my first thought is the battery. Does the truck start?

Next, do you get an error code with OBD2? I have a 97 4Runner that had a similar problem shifting into and out of overdrive. It was an electrical relay inside the tranny.

My thought is that if the battery is low perhaps a similar relay is trying to engage or disengage 4x4. Or that relay is just bad.

Could also be the 4X4 switch itself.

2002 ford explorer 4 wheel drive acting up

You have to put it in neutral with the engine running and the vehicle stopped and your foot on the brake. Press the button and wait a few seconds and you should hear it disengage. You have destoyed the deferential by driving it on a non slippery surface with the 4x4 engaged. Very very expensive mistake if you ever decide to fix it. Hopefully it will do ok in 2wd.

The low-reverse band may need adjustment. The tranny oil pan needs to removed to do this & you might as well change the tranny filter while your there. Purchase a chilton manual or haynes manual. Both show the procedure & specs to do the job. Also check your tranny fluid level first. Warm the car up & take for a short drive first. Check in park & make sure the van is on a level surface. If it is low, add but do not over fill. Low fluid will cause this symtom also. Good luck!
