1987 Dodge Dakota 6cyl. won't shift into reverse, drives forward in neutral but won't shift out of 1st that way. Drives and shifts fine in "D".

Is this an automatic? I can't tell if column shift or console? With column shift, Did you try taking shift linkage loose from tranny and shifting by hand? There are safety issues with trying that, make sure functional parking brake is set and the wheels are blocked. Also, have a helper sitting there with foot on the brake. Safety is your responsibility.

Maybe just a tranny issue, I'm not a tranny person.

You might be able to start it and kill it in drive? There are safety issues trying this and I don't want the responsibility. Safety is you responsibility.

Help? Suddenly my 1987 bronco II manual trans 4 wheel drive will not move in any gear.

First, did you check on the driveshaft? It's not dropped or has a broken U-joint and/or yoke? Will the truck move in 4WD? If so, the problem lies with the drivshaft and rear end. If not, then the problem lies in the transmission and transfer case. Can you shift gears while the engine is running without them grinding? If so then the clutch assembly is good, otherwise you need to look there.

I got a 1987 chevy s10 pick up truck 2 wheel drive v6 2.8l my transmission is not passing 1st gear ?do you know if the kick cable or tv cable needs to be adjusted .

Just about all you can do is, with the engine off, from under the hood open the throttle all the way and check if the TV cable is tight. And check the fluid level, smell if its burnt or look if its brown.

Other causes could be,
Sticky governor
Sticking shift valve
Worn bands

Many years ago my mom's first 4 speed automatic was a 84 S10 2.8 2wd. She did not know it was a 4 speed and the indicator was broke so she counted the clicks to find drive. She was driving in the hills in over drive and all the downshifting was too much for it (should have driven in hills in 3rd gear). After that the transmission would not shift out of second gear.

No power to rear wheels on a 98 Forester w/ auto trans. It runs and drives fine without any noise, shifts through all gears smoothly but will not distribute any power to the rear wheels. Anyone know?

just looked up the 1998 Legacy, and the all wheel drive is a constant drive system, so if you don't have any drive to the rear, there is no electrical switches or solenoids to turn the rear drive on or off the system is all mechanical, so you need to take a good look at the drive shaft going to the rear wheels, Jack the car up all 4 wheels and install jack stands under all four lower a-frames then have some one start the car and put the trans. in gear and watch the rear drive shaft to see if it is turning, if it is not you will have to have the trans-axle checked out for a bad rear drive gear, if the drive shaft is turning but the rear wheels are not you will have to have the rear differential checked for a broken ring or pinion gear, but what you may find is that the drive shaft may have a broken u-joint and that you can fix yourself, pay very close attention to were the drive shaft attaches to the trans-axle and the differential.......i hope this helps let me know if there is any thing i can help you further with.

I have a 1987 jeep wrangler and it will not shift into 4 wheel dr

The front axle connects 4wd by vacuum. check the vacuum hoses that run to the actuator. Pay close attention to the vacuum hoses running underneath the battery as battery acid can eat thru those hose easily. Good Luck.

1996 Rodeo Isuzu - I put it in Winter Drive and now 1 rear wheel

Based on another similar problem and it was fixed driving backwards, that's exactly what I did. I drove the Rodeo backwards and then would stop and put it in gear and did this for 10 minutes until I worked the 4x4 gear loose and now all four wheels run. I must say, I created quite a sight driving backwards in a Wal-Green's parking lot for 10 minutes.
